Former HP2 Owners - Why did you sell?

Because I recognized I wasn't an enduro racer. I hired a KTM 990ADV following business in Santiago, Chile and the thing took me far off road high in the Andes and down low to sandy and lonely Pacific beaches. It flew down the highway and through big cities. Except for the conveniece of BMW shaft drive there wasn't another HP2 advantage I could think of. The KTM was more versatile, had better range, had a fairing, had ABS, could carry a stray passenger, etc. and etc. And perhaps most of all... what an engine. Sold the HP2 for the 990ADV shortly after I returned. To be sure, if I was into racing or serious nearby off road speed, the HP2 would have the edge, but my interest is more for rides of exploration and adventure.

I'd never sell mine. I am in the process of making it ready for long distance. I am also buying and XC. Best of both....

Ooh the XC is not the same bike at all it doesnt have the feel or the oomph, i broke two of them and would NOT look at one. I am a BMW fan through & through but if the XC is your choice the 690 KTM though more money is an infinately better buy, if your short get the existing one if not the 690 R is about to be released.

If you want a BM then the 450 is probably your best bet though I would still have a good look at the orange 530.

Look at the suspension & ride & feel both bikes as its rather a lot of money to pay & then hate it.

Tell us how you broke an XC and what you did

XC - not very strong

The first thing I have to say is that the XC is not a strong bike it doesnt fit into any category if you set it up for the road its useless of road & visa versa.
I was riding a freinds (one of the BMW instructors) brand new one droped the clutch gently opened the throttle and BANG the engine seized.
We had to tow the bike back to the dealer, I think I bought one out of guilt. on mine I went through 2 rear shocks, they simply colapsed on me the second one caused an acident in traffic. Riding it hard off road the bike wasnt coping too well they look realy beaten after scapes through the bush plus replacement plastics are 5 times the price of other brands.
The bike is simply not nimble the suspension is not up to standard the motor has no pull and if you ride a purpose built enduro bike then climb back on to an XC you'll cry at the handling.
Apart from that they are great, err sorry if you have one already.

For the extra weight which in real terms is probably only 25kg the HP2 is a far better bike.

Or the 690 is worth the extra money.

HP=High Performance

I know why people are selling. They can't ride it the way it wants to be ridden.Stubborn and demanding-won't cope in any other way of riding.I was thinking yesterday while in the game, what a bike of superb performance it is.I will never sell mine.It makes me 20 years younger.
As for the XC,for any HP2E rider,it's a total waste of time to climb one.Took me 5 minutes to know and the rest was torture.Same for all other bikes i have ridden after the HP2 :nenau

I've sold mine at least 20 times, i've treated her bad and vise versa but there is something about that bike that does get under your skin. If you try and justify having it .........you can't........it's like that girl who you know is no good for you, but you just keep coming back for more:D

Wont sell but should

I hated BMW's. Never owned a Bmw. Rode a yama-ha-ha-ha around the world.
Thought Bmw's were a bike for old fogies with a beard and shoulder pads (sorry Bluesweeper). But, my mate told me about a "new" one he saw in a window some years back. I took it for a spin and was literally laughing my ass off.

The HP2E is the smiliest :) bike I have ever owned.
Even now, after 3 years of owning it, I still love to ride it, and I stillll get a buzz.

3 years on:-
  1. its hilariious as you see the looks on jap racer 600+ bikes face as you blow them off in a straight line (on enduro tyres and knobbies).
  2. people still stare at the bike at traffic lights
  3. I love to slide the bike round corners, especially when the tyres are worn
  4. People at mx tracks stare at me in wonder
  5. I love doing 160kph up a dirt hill and the cops say "its cool"
  6. KTM riders aknowldege me!
  7. Everyone want to ride it
  8. It still scares the shits out of me

I should sell it, its the only bike that has every scared the living daylighhts out of me.
With all the gloom and doom in the current market place, I still cant sell it.

Now that Ihave imported the bike from UK to Aus, its evern a better reason to still hang on to it. Shit, I even bought myself a trailer to take it into the bush.

Long live both me and the bike!!!!!

I think your mistaking me for someone who give a sh1t. Err.....I haven't got a beard or shoulder pads.:nenau

BTW, you still p1ss me off for leaving me and your mates here in the yUK. ;)

Sorry I meant elbow pads, but I can forgive you as you use proper "free" armour.

Yeah, I sort of miss parts of UK and the wombat runs, over here in Aus the BMW scene is less active. There is only one other HP2 in Melbourne and despite leaving him a note on his bike to call me, ne never did :(

I'll have to post a few pics of Aussie offroad scenery round melbourne.

cya Mate (if your ever over this neck of the woods?)

Oh,:rob you still got that Screen

First of all Hello to all of you! This is my first post here.

I've not sold mine (so far) but I already feel guilty that I've decided to do so.
Especially when I see it announced for sale, waiting for the execution...

Even the reason for sale (Dakar funds collection) seems to justify that move, I am more than sure that:
- Scotsmun is 100% right
- I don't want to sell it
- This is fantastic bike that I'll miss a lot...

See ya,

Wojtek

Thanks, Wojtek

Those are some mighty fine pix--in fact, next time I even think about selling mine, I'll get them out to keep myself from doing something foolish.
Oh, and Happy New Year!

[blue touch paper]Same reason as everyone else - it has far more ability than the rider and there's very few places to enjoy it over here[/blue touch paper]

And you'll be no different - just like the airhead :augie

True, which airhead? They were both overrated:augie

Just buy the bloody thing.

You should only loose about a grand in the month you own it.
