Four week wait - for a clutch - wtf?

Bike is in for two year (warranty) service.

Initially I was told there were no front engine covers (of course mine's rusty )as so many were being replaced they had run out in the UK.

Just been rung to say that they had found a front engine cover off a job where it was no longer needed.

Then told that the bellhousing had oil in it so the clutch and seals would be replaced under warranty

Then told that there are so many now being replaced there were none available either here or in the Fatherland

Two to FOUR week wait is likely - grrrrrrr

That's just plain crazy!

Especially when you consider that the clutch (I presume?) is common to all the R series engines - presumably they'll give you a loan bike for the time yours is off the road?

There had been a redesign on the flywheel apparently so the standard R series clutches can slip - so for h&s reasons they dont fit em???

presumably they'll give you a loan bike for the time yours is off the road? Andres

they're booked out a month ahead

but if there was one in I could certainly have one - for £50 a day

Similar story.. Bikes 14 months old with a mere 5k on the clock when the clutch started slipping. was told it would be a week on new clutch.. That was two weeks ago.. Also some main engine case bearing is whinning and also needs replacing...That was ordered 4 weeks ago and still no sign! All this occured a week after its first service! Just off the phone to the dealer who has promised a loan bike tomorrow... Don't expect to see my bike until mid October at this rate! Can't believe a company like BMW has such a poor parts network for such a popular machine...

Just called them again. They have now 'found' all but one of the parts for the clutch job (aparrently signed out to another job now not being done) and will get the last part early next week

Hd my clutch replaced under waranty last week dealer had to order parts from Germany took 3 days to arive at dealers so it seems your wait is long

You ever heard the saying if it ain't broke don't fix it? It also applies to don't change it either.

What you will be like with all that 'warranty, delear servicing, recall.....'

Clutch

That clutch may have been mine, if you know what I mean.

My bike has (hopefully had) the problem of the clutch not releasing on the splines, its just in warranty so the engineer claimed there was an oil leak on the rear seal, and ordered a new clutch (?), just in case, only to be told that they had run out but the very last one in Germany was being sent last weekend by special delivery.

I am pretty sure my clutch will be ok, I haven't heard, so that might be the last clutch coming your way.

Parts sourcing is a major problem, not just for BMW.

Part of it is the whole JIT manufacturing system - I had to wait 3 months for a door for my freelander. My suggested to HR Owen (bunch of ) being that they could drive to the factory and pick one up was not well received.


I don;t think that manufacturers ever get enogh spare parts - they seem to order for manufacturing but not much beyond.

Mind, I feel quite lucky that each of my 3 clutch / gearbox failures was resolved very quickly. (until the next one broke)

After my 12000 mile/2 year service last week and told I need a new gearbox. Dealer rang round and no gearbox available in this country or the Father land? Could be a long wait. 4 weeks plus? Clutch will also be changed at the same time.
Also told it was ok to carry on riding the bike? I have back home put it in the garage while they get the box as I don't want to damage any other parts of the transmition.

Picked up my 1150 after its MOT from Bristol Motorrad on Tuesday and overheard one of the mechanics (sorry, Technicians) say the same. Not a one anywhere. Must admit I thought he was joking. Seems not. I guess the charade with the chocolate camshafts on the K1200S's was a lesson not learned regarding external suppliers.

At the rate 1200 boxer engined bikes are being sold, I suspect the clutch suppliers for BMW are working flat out to keep up with demand. I dare say they are probably tooled up to just keep pace with the demand for planned new build R1200 boxer engined bikes on the assembly lines and a sudden demand for more parts exceeds their current capacity to supply. I bet when the R1200GS was the only new boxer engined model, supply wasn't an issue. Now just about the entire BMW boxer range has the 1200 unit in one form or another with, I suspect, the same clutch units hence supply delays.

I can't see BMW halting assembly of new models just to increase parts availability for existing customers, that would hurt productivity and profit. Maybe if you put a little pressure on the dealers (politely) they in turn will pressure BMW Motorrad and someone will pay for a bit of overtime rates at the supply level and get your parts more quickly?

Dealer rang yesterday all parts now on hand to do the job. 9 days wait not too bad.
Bike booked in for gearbox and clutch change this Thursday & Friday.

Must be a job lot.. My clutch arrived yesterday so all going well will have the bike by the weekend. Still waiting on a front case cover but assured it'll be here this week after a 5 week wait. In the meantime been given an R1200ST... ST meaning Serious Torture I believe.. Did 100 miles on it yesterday and couldn't wait to get off the bloody thing! Bring back the GS all is forgiven...
