Frame difference twin shock road/GS

Hi all

Just a quick question regarding the difference in the frames for a similar year and engine size, twin shock road BMW and a twin shock GS.

Is the geometry different, strength, or are they basically the same.

no such thing as a twin shock GS

Both. They only made them with mono or Paralever swingarms. Anything else is an imposter. (Though some of the imposters are far more sought after than the real GS g/s)

A further question if I may; ignoring the rear suspension side of this is the GS frame substantially stronger or are the differences just tyres and cosmetics?

I believe the 80 and 100 frames are the same spec and they use a lighter grade tube for the 65. Some one else will have to confirm this

G/s & GS

The g/s was developed from twin shock bikes but no production g/s twin shocked bikes were ever made, the first g/s was a mono lever then the GS was paralever, the twin shocked bike you have seen are specials built by various companies like HPN in germany being the ultimate off road twins.

Paralever frames seem to have 3mm wall thickness for the spine tube whereas Monos (my ST at least) seem to be 2mm. Rest of the tubing seems to be the same on both frames. No idea why.

Two different frames

GS paralever = Long wheel base

R80 ST and G/S = short wheelbase frame

Ah I knew there was a difference somewhere

The frames are still basically the same it's only the swinging arm length that changes the wheelbase.

It sounds like to me that road frame could form the basis for a off road special without too much modification.

I'm full of goo and snot at the moment ( ah thanyow Dragon Rally ) so not hanging about much on here ! If building a gs or a g/s then use a genuine gs frame

I know there are differences but most of the differences seem to be to accommodate the rear suspension and slight thickness increase in the main frame tube.

Probably what i would be wanting to do is build a twin shock bike that has reasonable off road capabilities.
