frame straightening question

I had a low speed spill in the wet on the way to work this morning.

I´m OK but unfortunately the front of the bike hit the crash barrier with enough force to push the headstock backwards. I think the forks are OK, but the two headstock bracing plates are folded slightly.

It was pretty obvious something was wrong when the front tyre contacted with the bash plate the first time i tried to use the front brake. :eek:

So what to do ? Is this straighten-able ? Find someone with a hydraulic jig ? or another frame ?

Anybody had any success sorting out the same damage ?

My 100gs has the same issue, after a dispute with a toyota previa both strengthening plates are warped. The bike still drivesperfectly straight, at 70mph I can take both hands off the bars and she will slow right down to about 30 without and shaking of the bars, even now with new steering bearings in place.
I'm keeping a very close eye on all the welds around the area for any sign of damage. Unfortunately both wheels are still on the ground when I put it on the main stand.
 
Plenty of bike shops will straighten the headstock using a motoliner jig or similar I would suspect the residual strength but as you have to strip the bike down anyway then it would be cheaper to buy a frame I would have thought.

I´ve just checked the forks they seen OK. But then i started to compare the gap between the alternator cover and frame down tubes.....and its slightly different. Have you looked closely at yours ?

Makes me realise how hefty the front wheel and forks are.

Maybe the headstocks needs more braceing.
 
I had similar issue with R65. All the frame people I contacted wanted more money than I could buy another frame for. Try Moto Works, Moto Bins or Sherlocks for a new frame. I bought one for £120 delivered.
 
The integrity of your frame is now compromised , it will be even more so
when / if you decide to straighten it.
The accuracy of modern Jigs are unbelieveable , it will leave it spot on.
But , should you be unfortunate enough to prang it again , there is every
chance it will fold.
If you can get a SH frame for £120 , then i would go down that road.
£120 wont go far on a Jig .

The big one here is ,, You walked away from it.

you need to think about that one.
 
Been there, done that.

It is suprising how easy it is to bend the headstock backwards and buckle those plates.
Pulling it back in shape though, was a whole different story, the plates didn't want to cooperate.

So we ended up with grinding those plates off, straighten the headstock, flatten the plates and welding them back in again.

Bike been on and off the jig several times, because the owner of the shop didn't want me to do grinding and welding whilst the bike was on his (rather expensive) equipment.

We have a specialist in our village with a Motoliner and some years ago I bought a written off K100RT and they straightened out the frame and forks. As good as new and with no worries over 'compromised' frame. They also straightened a badly dented front wheel. I don't recall it costing a packet either.

Not quite sure what i´m doing yet. Changing the frame seems like it might be the best idea, but there would be added complications with the exhausting spanish paperwork.

Yes ,i am relieved to have no physical damage, but my poor broken GS makes me sad. Still can´t quite believe how easily it bent.

The corner that got me is known round here as la curva del diablo.....

Strange, as it was Motorworks that supplied me with a perfectcondition R65 frame for £120 delivered. It even came with logbook/V5 attached despite me saying that I didn't need one.

Those R65 frames still going cheap but the paralevers are about £500. Why would that be, does the R65 not get enough speed up to do any damage?
