France & Germany what are the real world speed limits?

Speed traps

Just got back from trip down to Bertchestgarden along Austria, Leitchenstein, Switzerland.
All the popular mountain roads seemed clear, but local police especially in Austria were manning speed guuns on village entrances, and at the bottom of steep mountain roads where they enter speedlimits.
Didn't see anyone coming the other way flashing lights as a warning.
No trouble in France, Luxembourg, Belguim, or Germany.
Speed cameras that are fixed are much more difficult to spot than over here as they don't paint them yellow, and mostly don't have zips on the road, plus no warning signs.
We did have one mishap where trying to spot exit wandered into traffic light camera with lights on red, and had my picture taken FRONT and back......waiting to here from Germany:augie

Hi!

GPS based (and all other) Radar Warning systems are not allowed in Germany.

But many people are using the GPS version.

I do not.

Because I really accept speed limits.
But you cannot watch your speed 100%.

I didn´t pay a penny for more than 10 years but in 2009

4 times in 10 weeks.

56 in the village
59 in town
66 in the 60zone on the motorway.
and???????

stupid. but cheaper like a radar warner
and cheaper as the penalty if the catch you.
75€ and 3 POINTS in Flensburg.

Speed is for the open road

Just got back from trip down to Bertchestgarden along Austria, Leitchenstein, Switzerland.

I for one have no problem with this, seems like a fair trade off to me. Have your fun on the open road, behave in the towns. I have lived here in Austria for just over two years now. I have never seen a speed trap on the open road. Mainly it is tourist who get caught, we have found that many visitors don't know that the 50 kph limit applies in towns-there is no requirement to display a 50 limit sign. Why speed in our towns and villages? You are a guest in a country where local people normally drive/ride sensibly in such limits. In return the people also feel comfortable walking about and crossing the roads. Austria is very welcoming to bikers and we want it to stay that way. You are on holiday, why risk a fine or generate anti bike feeling? :rob There are so many good roads with little traffic and no traps to enjoy.

I've done about 6K in France,Belgium,Lux and Switzerland this year, I've been flashed several times on the motorways but as these cams were frontfacing no worries :) I have spoken to several people from various countries who have been caught and fined in France and Belgium and who haven't paid... apparently these fines may not be pursued, although you wouldn't want that hanging over you would you? the French cams are well marked and I must say that as I didn't take the proverbial I didn't have any problems in towns, of course you definitely do not want to be caught in Switzerland!

When we were in Switzerland, we passed two sad looking German plated KTM's parked outside the local Plod shop, I'd guess they were paying fines not asking for directions :augie

Just arrived back this afternoon, Zeebrugge,(Belgium), Germany, Austria, Italy, Swiss, France, Luxemburg, Belgium, Calais (France)

Agreed with Previous Posts by People,

We Cruised Down and Back on Various Motorways at Speeds Approx 85 - 95 Mph,

Zumo 550 warned me of all the Speed Camaras in Belgium and Various others in most Countrys.

I found in all the countries majority of the traffic travel a lot slower than in the UK, it felt worrying as i flew by, Kept thinking i'd stick out like a sore thumb the fact im speeding.
having said that when i could as a car past me i'd tuck in behind it, they seemed to know the road and slow down when needed.

Only Saw a Handful of Rear Facing Camara and Luckly for us the ones i didnt were Forward facing.
and after reading the other posts we must have been really Lucky as we Never saw a Single Cop Car all Week.
Also Funny reading post about CH, the Sat Nav Kept having Funny Doo's all through Switzerland, Losing Signal/Telling Wrong Info.

Off the Motorways, as we travelled through a village we followed the speed limit or there abouts, and on all other roads we just blasted on as fast as we felt safe. If the Traffic Stopped anywhere, It felt Safer to just wait so we just sat and waited but as soon as a foreign biker sneaked through etc we just tucked behind them also. in italy you dont wait long it's like a law for cars and one for bikers, it was great.

Enjoy your Trip

Just a thought on France

Last year I was travelling through France. I had satnav on, & normally use the speedo on it ( Set in KM) as my speed guide.
As we approached a well signposted forward facing speed camera, I set my speed at exactly the posted limit.
I was flashed. Looked again at satnav. 1km/hr over limit.
Their trigger speed must be set exactly on the limit.
