Very early stage of planning but thinking of doing Portsmouth/Bilbao early September, travel along the Pyrenees to near Perpinon(3 days), stay 5 days on the coast then travel back up France to the Zeebrugge ferry(5-6 days).

I have trusty sat nav but would like Michelin maps to help plan the route. Any advice on scale/series/map numbers that would be useful would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I used the Rough Guide map for my trip in 2008:

http://www.stanfords.co.uk/series/rough-guide-country-and-region-maps/

Redders23 just borrowed it for his recent trip and did not complain so I assume it served him well too.

It covers the area better, is good quality and has a decent scale, I think you need 3 Michelin maps to cover the Pyrenees and Andorra so they work out a lot more pricey.

Spain 1:250000 - 573 Regional - Pais Vasco/Euskadi, Navarra, La Rioja
574 Regional - Catalunya (if you're staying on spanish side)

France 1:150000 342 Local - Hautes-Pyrenees, Pyrenees-Atlantiques
343 Local - Ariege, Hautes-Garonne
344 Local - Aude, Pyrenees-Orientales

Going back up

France 1:1000000 726 National - Grandes Itineraires (Main Drags)

Go to http://www.viamichelin.com/web/Maps - select the country you are interested in - drag around and zoom 'til you have the area/scale you want then either hit Print Screen or use a program such as ScreenPrint to produce a .jpg which can be printed out in A4 size to fit your mapcase

Having marked out a route with a flourescent marker pen I then use my daughter's laminator to waterproof the map (maps can be put back to back) and make them easier to handle

I've got a spare Michelin map of the Perpignan area. Pm me and I'll bung it in the post for you next week if you want. Will cost ya a few coins in the charity box of your choice.

Michelin 1:200,000 scale map book of France for about £12 will show you all and every road you will ever need.

Many of the French Michelin maps overlap into Spain. If not, simply pick up a local Spanish Michelin map or local equivalent.

The Grande Itinaraires Michelin map is excellent, too. It shows the 'Bis' Tourist routes, all well signposted.

See stickies.

The Michelin 722 - France reversible 2011 is good value at £5.99.

It shows the green highlighted roads, goes further west than Santander, covers the Pyrenees and gets you up to Belgium just missing out on Zeebrugge

Michelin maps before you go and then find a good bookshop/map shop, once you're there

That's what I do, you can get some great local maps and it's good to browse/mooch locally
