I was checking over my PD prior to taking it for a mot tomorrow morning and noticed one of the throttle cables is badly frayed. I don’t want to ride 50 miles there with it in case it breaks (and the mot lad wouldn’t be impressed).
I’m assuming I can just replace the lower section and just one side as the rest look fine?
Also, is it a difficult job to do? After fitting I imagine the Rickover will need balanced between the two cylinders?

All advice appreciated

Very easy to replace, but you’ll need to take the tank off to do it and rebalance the carbs after you’ve done it. The tickover shouldn’t be affected because the butterflies are sat on the throttle stops at tick over, it’s the balance when the throttle is just pulled open a little bit that needs checking, and if necessary adjusting with one of the cable slack adjusters on the cable outer at the carb end. You’ll need a twinmax or similar to do the balancing

It should be. Might as well replace the lot (via Motorworks). You’ll have to lift the top of the gear box on t throttle; then disconnect the cables at the splitter under the tank. You might get away with just replacing the cables after the splitter? Then loosen the ends at the carbs and fit the new ones.

You’ll need to sync the carbs after that which is where things might get complicated?

Has your bike got one cable coming out of the throttle housing at the handgrip (in which case it will go to a splitter under the tank and from there two short cables run to the carbs). If it has two cables coming out of the throttle housing at the handgrip there won’t be a splitter under the tank, instead each cable will go direct to the carb. Check before you order a new cable so as you get the correct part

Thanks

Syncing the carbs sounds a bit technical and I don’t have the kit, I’ll need to wait for a passing capable person I suspect!

OK so you’ve got the twin cable set up on your bike, ie no splitter under the tank. It’s a very straightforward job to replace one or both of the cables. You could just fit a new cable and adjust it so the slack on each cable is as equal as you can get it. It won’t be perfect but it’ll be close enough for you to ride the bike to the MoT station then find someone later who’s got a carb balancer.

Don’t be put off doing it yourself, it’s nothing like as complicated as it sounds

You can get the basic set up pretty close by “ear”
Replace the offending cable, leave it with more slack in the inner cable than the other side.
As you pick up the revs from idle, you feel and hear it odd legging( like a stutter)
Take out the slack on the replaced cable until it picks up evenly, you’ll soon see/hear/feel the sweet spot.👍
You’ll soon be having your own airhead specialist up your neck of the woods,
Got a house viewing on Saturday,fingers crossed.🤞

Thanks, I’ll order the cable
Good luck with the viewing, Black Isle?
If I get it running roughly I’ll be round!
I’d offer to call in on the way past but 4am is not a good time to be balancing carbs😆
Kettle always on, if you need a break welcome

Looking at the photos,it would probably be a good plan to buy a full cable set,
Motobins sell them, you’d save a little cash buying the set.
I’d be happy to replace them all,and any other jobs later in the year once I’ve got somewhere to live.👍
Could be a plan, it just has to not break going to the mot and onwards

Two properties near Craigellachie,
One nearer to Keith,
Nothing on Black Isle ticking the boxes or budget😆
