I was advised by a garage that the starter motor on my 1150GSA needs to be replaced.

Is this an easy job to do? The Haynes manual seems to indicate that it is.

Also, I see that Motorworks do a recon replacement, anyone got any experience of these?

Very simple.

Remove starter motor cover, one bolt (two if you've the ADV jump starter post attached to the starter motor through the cover).

Undo terminal bolt (13MM) on the starter. Minding you don't touch any other metal with your spanner as it's permanently live (undo initially with spanner and then spin off using fingers).
Disconnect/pull off black terminal.

If it's still the original starter motor it'll also have a cable tie around the case, just cut it.

Undo the two allen bolts that hold the starter in place. The lower bottom bolt will need a swivel extension to reach it properly.

When removing the starter be careful not to lket the live terminal cable touch anything. If you've not done it before put a strip of gaffa tape around the terminal.

Replacement is opposite procedure. Just make sure you don't trap any of the electrical wiring behind the starter between the starter motor and engine case.

Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes the first time you remove it, 5 minutes once you know what to do. :D

I've got one of those Aftermarket ones sitting in my Garage doing nothing.
It's got a few marks on it here and there but is otherwise as new as I bought it to replace mine but never used it.
It's yours for £45 plus Postage if it's of interest.

strip it and clean it up should be good after that.

Depends what the problem is. No amount of cleaning will solve the most common fault of the case magnets disintegrating :D.

Another quick point - make sure you remove the small locating dowel from the starter motor case and refit it to the new starter motor. - the dowel can also stay in the engine case, if so no need to do anything - I'm just replacing a starter motor so I'll take a picture of the dowel

Cheers Neil.

If I disconnected the -ve lead on the battery will that mean I don't have to worry about the spanner touching any of the other metal on the bike?

Yes. But it'll take longer to undo the terminal than to remove the starter motor :D

And a picture pointing to the locating pin.

Sorry, I haven't had any PM's from you.
I'll see if I can find them in the other Folders

Just asked if it was for an R1150GSA and if it had been used, appreciate it's a recon. What brand is it ?

PM replied to just now.
It's not a Recon, it's new but it's not OEM.
I'll have to have a look to see what Make it is cos I don't have a clue.

Similar to that one although not from that Supplier I don't think.
It was also more expensive than that one.
Looking at the Price of the one in the Listing tho, you'd be better off buying one of those and I'll keep mine as a Spare.

No problem, thanks for the offer anyway. I'm going to get a recon one from Motorworks.

If you have any issues when you get it, or just want a hand give me a shout as I'm not far away from you (New Malden) and have stripped and rebuilt mine twice and ultimately replaced it.
