Hi folks. I'm off to France next week and I was just wondering if anybody knew of a speed camera database for France, available for the Garmin 2720? Cheers

there's usually a fecking great sign warning you about the camera half a Km before you get to it :)

Interesting article in Honest John recently (Telegraph),:)
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/main.jhtml?xml=/motoring/2007/05/12/mrjon12.xml
where french police are looking at GPS and applying law sometimes incorrectly (!) by confiscating/fining for using a radar detecting device!!!:spitfire
honest john directs to a website that demonstrates the difference between detectors (illegal) and gps with legal"public domain" information stored in them (eg POIs), the thing being that info pages are in french and can be carried to "counter" the french police enthusiasm for confiscating legal equipment and fining for its use! :thumb2
Its a pain, but if you show this to the agent de police it may persuade him not to put you into the administrative process, which is not good....although people have managed to prove their case later, at some cost in time and aggro!:thumb
its only a couple of sheets of paper, but it might avoid a sh*t load of trouble

Oh and by the way, this website advertises a list of fixed sites for Euro 9ish suitable for gps!
not tried this but may have a look!

In France i would recommend sticking to the speed limits wherever possible, camera databases (obviously) give only fixed camera positions, however Le local bobbys are very active with all the mobile camera/laser equipment with normally a zero tolerance attitude to speeding and IMO zero sense of humour:(

Ride safe

Thanks everyone for the reply's.....to be honest I will (mainly :augie ) be sticking to the speed limit's as SWMBO will be following on her Hornet 9, however it's easy to get carried away:moped: when you've got a lot of miles to do :D .

Where about are you going bluepassat? We're heading down to the south and will hopefully be at the Monaco GP.:bounce1

French Speed Camera's

If you are travelling south from Calais on the A26 then lookout for gendarme's with hand-held radar before the first peage / toll , no need to chase you in his Clio 'cause they are waiting at the toll booth for you. Even more frequent is the radar on the return / Northbound side of the A26 before you get to the toll - you can usually see a queue of brits waiting to sit in the back of the gendarme's van at the toll and hand over their hard-earned wonga.

Have a great trip.

Good website, thanks Mike :thumb2

I think that French police can set up mobile speed traps anywhere they like, they don't have to use nominated locations like in the UK, therefore GPS camera location in France would be pretty useless (IMHO). You get lots of warnings for the fixed ones and if you speed in villages you only get what you deserve. Out of town they don't seem that worried, I've even had a friendly wave as I've sped past (or was that a laser he was waving?)

Fixed radars are sign posted "for your comfort and security"

Mobile/hand held are usually to be found as you enter, or more often as you leave a town/village/hamlet. In the built-up area its 50. Then they have a buffer zone that's 70. They usually sit in the 70 zone, monitoring the 50 stretch.

However, in rural areas you will be safe during the lunch period, 12 'till 2:augie
and usually after mid day on a Sat and all day Sunday... 35hr week;)

Thats unless you are on the roads to the ports cos they are just easy money for them. They are learning what a pot of gold it is from the UK rossers.

As you have seen the fixed camera positions are available online but at the moment they don't affect you anyway as there isn't an agreement in place between France and the UK.
However, the mobile radars are a bastid and about to get worse I reckon. Sarkozy was the man behind them and he has just been made President today. The road fatalities for this April have just been announced and they are up on last year so I think Sarko will be lighting a fire under the Gendarmes so watch out!

I guess I'll have to put Dido or Pink Floyd on the Ipod and just relax the speed and look at the scenery :headphone

Thanks again :thumb
