New speed cameras in Spain

Thanks for posting that brut33, I'm guessing the French will follow suit in due course if they haven't already, and I do like driving in Spain on B roads.
I do wonder though, how close to the camera do you have to be, I mean my TomTom go app on my phone will show any camera long before it could detect me unless of course it's on a long straight.

Speed cameras in France operate within marked areas. Those are not generally that long, and you know to keep the speed when you see the sign.
If you are in a car (or use a phone on the bike) they are also religiously marked as police by the locals.

I don't remember if Spain is the same (signs).

They have new average speed cameras in Portugal and they are not indicated, nor are they very noticeable!

Mostly main routes, so still fun to be had.

Yeah, similar behaviour to France, Italy and some parts of Germany.
If you know where to go and have fun, no issue. Careful on main/populated areas and be merry.

The very twisty routes have generally limits of 70/90 and most people are unable to keep that pace anyway on those :D :D :D

This seems to be changing now as they're implementing autonomous mobile battery powered cameras which can pop up unsigned anywhere (although usually on high-risk roads). More on the government website here which also gives the official word on allowable speed margins. There are also unmarked police/commercial cars which patrol fixed routes (in French but Google/whatever translate will help out).

However all the above tend to be on major routes or in obvious high-risk areas (eg roadworks) where speeding would be best avoided anyway.

Plus if someone thinks they're at risk of missing a fixed camera sign and getting caught out then they can always get a satnav that works around the French ban on speed camera alerts by alerting to "obstructions" or "danger zones" ! Or just stick to the back roads/keep to the speed limit.

Anyhow, we are no longer in the EU and any fines should be ignored.

Interesting way of thinking there.

I'd add, especially on this forum, where a lot of people complain (rightly so) about foreigners not following rules on UK shores. :D
Apart from that, they would keep tabs on those fines. Ends up being more expensive/inconvenient than not paying an odd ~100 quid every once in a while.

I was going to ignore the many I received doing my UK - PT runs....So I looked into it and what were the possible consequences.
France was the main one for me. In France the penalty is graduated to another offence after a period of time, can`t remember what it is now, but it means if you are stopped again then you can have your vehicle and or belongings confiscated to pay the increased sum that you owe and you will be detained until the amount owed is paid and may also get jail time.

I thought, matters not, as it is dependent upon your vehicle registration....It is not, it is your name and other details that have been provided by DVLA to the French/Spanish/Portuguese.

I had many from France and a few from Spain, so I paid up...The last thing I needed was banging up, especially with a mental wife and a dog...It was cheaper to pay the penalty, than to face the expense of everything else....The main one being emotional distress caused to my wife and dog and it being my fault.

A few years ago in Tarragona, Spain, they got pissed off with a famous yuppie mega car racers shooting the ring road at over 200 kph so the following year they trapped them at an intersection, impounded the cars and detained them all in police cells until the next court session. It being the big local fiesta extending an already long weekend I think they we in for four nights enjoying the accumulated aroma of the piss and shit of generations on the walls, delicious prison food and of course the salubrious company of the other inmates with who they had to share cells. I've no doubt that some missed the glass of Boli for breakfast followed by a nice fat line of coke ... but further more they were stripped of their mobiles and could only make that one call to a solicitor so that by the Monday when they should have been back at work in The City making squillions they were sat powerless not even able to tell anyone where they were ...

But the beats bit was the last. On finally emerging from court on the Wednesday - having had to find cash to pay their fines, no taxi would take them to the city pound to reclaim the cars, which had not had a 'nice' time and were also entrapped by the dozens of others impounded over the weekend. The attendant, who I knew, could only shrug his shoulders and told them they'd have to wait for the owners of these wrecks to move them when, and if, they had paid their own fines ... Oh how we laughed :)

I'm good at getting speeding tickets in foreign lands  so I'd best be careful in Spain 🇪🇸
