MiGSel , Shrek and the lady who doesn't like being called Mrs Shrek (aka Tre) planning a days ride out without me.....I was in no state to go far from my sleeping bag on Saturday(must have been something I ate....) but later in the day I ventured a bit further afield and explored the delights of Cornwall in the sunshine.

The final parting shot - about 5km south of Antwerp. I said to MiGSel that even though we are aching, tired , suffering from noise and buffetting and are depressed at the end of a great weekend and having ridden over 2000 KM .....at least we can start planning for the next one.

Still we had a great time and more to come :beerjug:

See you next time, on that side of the Channel or this.

What panniers and top box have you got on the bike and what sizes?
I've been told some combinations of Panniers and TB's don't work particularly when opening the pannier lids.

Cheers

The panniers are the TT "special set" with the cutout for the exhaust, and the top box is the Zega XL.

I put the top box in the "wrong" direction, so it fits between the panniers. To do that, I cut a chunk of the seat.

If you put it the other way, you need to raise it about 50mm to be able to get the lids of the panniers. But I think TT sels the necessary mounting stuff for that.

Here's an animated pic of the luggage setup:

This is the "proper way" to do it:

Some more info here.

Can you open the pannier lids with the top box on then? Unless the photo is an optical illusion it looks like the TB overhangs the pans.

What size are the panniers?
I asume you've had to modify you seat on the Adventure to fit the TB. I assume I'd have to do the same on my standard GS?
Thanks for the info.

Hi Steve,

My panniers are 41 liters.

I can open mine because I mounted the top box like that, "the long way". To do that, I cut a chunk of the Adv seat. I don't think you need to do anything if you just remove the pillion seat on a standard GS.

If you mount it like it is in the second pic, you need to rise the top box about 50mm to get the lids of the panniers. At least on a GSA, I'm not sure about the rack height on your GS.

You can ask Uncle Albert maybe, he's got the Zega XL mounted on his GS.

Cheers,
Michel

Touratech panniers (Zega bags, like Michel has fitted) have removeable lids, rather than hinged ones.

One of the disadvantages of Vern's design, which open forwards, is that the 'swept area' means that the topbox needs to be either 1.narrow or 2. mounted further back.

Jesse bags open sideways, ie along the length, and would cause less of a problem. If you must have a top box, then Vern's are probably not right for your needs...

Mike:)

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't think of it, but it is confusing if you're not familiar with the pannier lids.

How are you doing? And how do you like the gps mount so far?

Cheers,
Michel

Top bit of kit Michel - I'm using it with the standard 3"ish RAM extension arm, as the dealer over here screwed up my order for the 1 1/2" arm.
It wobbles very slightly (as you might expect, with the weight of a Navigator II on an arm that length), but is still readable & a lot better than having it mounted on my handlebars.
The combination of Tobinators, a Vario screen and the NavII might mean that I've got to keep the 3" arm, as I still have to get access to the little 'security' screw at the top of the NavII cradle - I'll see how the 1 1/2" arm works when I get it in a few days...

Cool Mike,

Thanks for the pic!

I had a problem with the tiny screw too and I don't trust the flimsy metal tab that grabs the even more flimsy plastic lip at the back of the unit much.

So I'm using the RAM cradle now.

But I guess that's not an option with the Nav II. If you want to use the short RAM arm, I think you'll have to loosen the RAM arm every time you want to remove the security screw and take the unit off.

Cheers,
Michel
