front brake disc studs

looking at my front brake disc studs have noticed they are all rusted wondering where i could get replacements for them the bike is a 2007 gs 1200.there are ten in total 5 each side

Should be torx headed bolts.

In any case the best place to buy replacements would be from BMW.

Pro bolt want £7.10 each for titanium replacement bolts. So I'll stick with the rust thanks.

Interestingly, they no longer do stainless ones. I'm sure someone who's better at search or a metallurgist will be along shortly to explain why (again).

If you want stainless then http://www.screwfix.com/prods/33261...crews-A2-Stainless-Steel-M8-x-20mm-Pack-of-50 bag of 50 for under £6. Used these many many times on bike disks particularly Yamaha's since the original ones are made of chocolate and never come out without rounding.

I wouldn't personally get from from screwfix ... there a fantastic shop & i buy a lot of stuff from them ...
But one thing does need careful consideration.... these Torx bolt hold the discs on & will be subjected to high shear loading .... therefore genuine set bolt if not hardened will be of a high quality material.

I doubt as to whether the screwfix set bolts are.

I don't think the question is whether or not Screw fix bolts are good enough or not. They are A2 stainless steel the same as everyone else's A2 stainless A2 is a grade. The question is more likely should stainless be used in the first place, is it a suitable material? I say yes because I have used it many times before. Some would say no in which case your stuck with 8.8 grade plated bolts which Screwfix also does in the same size. Again 8.8 is the grade and are the same as everyone else's and so at £3.51 for 50 I know where I would rather buy them instead of £1.04 each. Its all about choices and whether you want to pay that much extra because it comes in a BMW bag. On the subject of quality, don't assume that because its OE its high quality. I cant comment on BMW disk bolts but as far as Japanese manufacturers go their disk bolts aren't anything like as good quality as 8.8. I know, I have had to drill a few out in my time because they are such poor quality.
By the way to the OP my disk bolts aren't button head anyway, they are large flat heads. I linked to button head because you posted links to supposed replacement that were button head. I don't know what the older bikes are like so maybe that's right for an 07. Just be sure your buying the correct style of bolt and not what someone thinks will do.

Hi Marki,
You obviously know your 8.8 from your 10.9 as do i What is important here is that non technical or engineering people will read these posts & potentially fit bolts which aren't suitable for application..

Everything we do these days has implications... i know of a case going through court in the new year where a person like your good self recommended a modification on a blog (not this blog or marque) which failed with disastrous consequences.

Got the same problem of rusting front brake discs bolts.. and discs actually!
Question: would WD40 not represent a risk if inadvertently leaking onto discs or pads?

You don't spray it all over the place. Well you can if you want to but you may want to talk to your life insurance company first to make sure you're up to date.

Just a question to you engineering types. Isn't there an arguement that goes you shouldn't use any old stainless bolts since some stainless steel is significantly weaker under shear when it's already under tension (like bolts usually are when they are holding something together)?

Replaced mine 3 years ago when they went orange. Did the 85 mile return trip to Pro Bolt who supplied me with A4 stainless for the discs, caliper mounting and pinch bolts and the fork leg pinch bolt. It was over £60 if I remember correctly but are still looking as new. The guy there said I had to have A4 stainless or titanium (at twice the stainless price). Surprised there not doing them any more!
