Front brake questions (1150)

Hello,
Went out for a ride today and I think I've got brake problems—I can hear a 'tick-a-tick-a-tick-a' noise from the brakes when coming to a stop and the bike isn't braking as well as it used to. Time for a strip down and clean!
I've read Mzokk's thread in the FAQ section but I've never done this on a BMW before, and I hoping someone could help with a couple of questions before I phone to Motorworks/Sherlocks and start ordering bits!
Firstly, the catalogues seem to distinguish between 'evo' brakes and non-'evo' brakes. I've got a 2002 1150 GS, picture of brakes below. How do I know which I've got - evo or non-evo?

Secondly, that pin-looking thing between the two sides of the caliper - er, the quite rusty-looking bit - while I'm sorting the brakes I might as well replace those. What is it called? 'Pad retaining pin'?

Any help appreciated.

You have evo brakes as same as me on my 2002 1150.Calipers and pads are different on non evo

Yip those are evo brakes. The pins might be ok if they are not ridged see how they clean up with wet and dry wire wool and autosolve first. A t45 torx bit removes the calipers and a t30 the pins (easiest to loosen the pins before removing the caliper). Do one side at a time in case you pop a piston out on the one you are not woking on!!

Thanks for the replies and advice! I have the necessary torx bits so will have a go at cleaning the pins up first.

Make sure it's not the discs making the noise - grip hold of them and move backward and forward - lots of them have movement on the disc mountings, and make a noise when braking

BTW, are you a supplier of brake bits? (pads, retaining pins, brake cleaner, etc?)

I believe Steptoe was offering brakes at about £8 a set a while ago.

Have a look in the for sale section or do a search and that should throw up what your looking for.

ps.... I am about to do the same on mine but I keep putting it off

Had something similar from my 1150 (no evo brakes) it was the wavy washers that hold the floating disc in place that had dissapeared. Cause of this was the caliper seizing and pushing the disc about. New washers and bolts from the dealer and clean and free off the caliper and problem sorted.

What is the difference visual or otherwise between Evo brakes and non Evo others ?
is it because they have BMW on the outside ?

Is it possible to get spares for them, i recently removed the pistons and found them to be Alloy .
The last couple of mm looked a bit corroded on one of them by road salt i guess.

You were right. Although the calipers did need a serious clean-up, it is one of the discs making the noise—it moves back and forth on the mountings. All the springs are in place and there doesn't appear to be any loose mountings.

Would really appreciate a further wise word of advice: Does this movement matter? Should I take the disc off and think about replacing disc and/or springs and/or bolts?
