If I tighten up my front brake calipers to the recommended 40NM the wheel goes tight if I try to rotate it. At 30NM it OK. I've tried gradually tightening them but it makes no difference. Any ideas? Its a 99 1100GS.

The tightness of the calipers should not have an effect on the freeplay of the wheel. Your pads may not be releasing fully due to the pistons being slightly seized. Try giving the calipers and pistons a bit of a clean. If it still sticks the disc may be warped slightly.
I'm sure a more qualified GS'er will come along and tell me I'm talking horlicks, I usually do!
Hi Neil,
Possibly a daft question, but if you were re-torqueing your front callipers you'd presumably done some thing else to the front wheel as well? Could what ever you'd done have altered anything?
Cheers Brian V
Thanks for all the advice. I had taken the wheel off for the first time,to give it a good clean, and it was working fine before that, although I had never checked the torque before so it may never have been at 40NM. The warped disc could be worthwhile checking out as I have a BMW warranty from when I bought it last summer, so hopefully that would be covered.
Again thanks for the advice.
No, I torqued it to the recommended 30NM and the clamp bolts to 22NM as it said in the manual. It was a new torque wrench and I tested it against an old one, so I'm pretty sure I did what I was supposed to do. It all seems to work OK at 30NM, I'll just keep an eye on it and mention it when it goes in for its MOT, just before the warranty runs out!
