Evening all, does anyone know if the sound dampening pad behind the black plastic cover is still in the 2012 models? Also, removing the plastic cover - have had a quick look, can this be done without removing the front spring? Assuming the cover (black plastic cover only) can be removed without the need to drain engine oil?
Thanks

No Idea if the foam pad is still fitted to the 2012 model, but its a 5 min job to remove the cover and check. No oil behind it and it wil come away without touching the spring. 2 self tappers near the top and the threaded small bolts towards the bottom and away it comes.

on my 05 model, there is a small drain hole at the bottom of the plastic cover. If yours is the same, you could poke a small piece of wire in there. You will soon feel if there's a lump of foam in there.

You'll only need to poke in approx 50mm.

Alternatively, remove the cover and wipe some ACF50 over the metal. Someone on here sprayed the metal with some waxoyl...

A kind previous owner of mine sprayed behind the cover with Waxoyl, no sign of corrosion anywhere on the cover and its an 06 bike.

Had mine off last week. Don't remember any kind of pad. If you have a GSA you will need to remove that front protection bar... well I did?

You'll have to remove your Hooton's Crud Catcher before you can remove the plastic cover.

HERE be the linky

Took mine off this morning to spray the engine casing with ACF50. Inside there was a fair amount of grit, like sharp sand, and I can see that road grit and salt would easily accumulate. No foam pad on this 2012 GS.

Mine off on Saturday. A bit awkward with the upper 2 screws.
No pad but some fine light coloured dust, no grit or moisture. Cleaned & covered in waxol.
