Front fork leg removal?

Help / advice needed everyone....

Simple job turned into a nightmare yesterday Had some new tyres fitted and took the wheels in loose to my mate to fit. Problem arose when I was fitting the small Torx head screw that attatches the front mudguard to the fork leg just above the callipers.

It Sheared off I drilled it out with an undersize drill and was putting in a reverse thread tap to draw it out and that snapped as well

The only way of getting this out is to have it spark eroded. Have found a local engineering shop that will do it for £20.

Problem is getting the fork leg out. I know the top half can be taken out "upwards" but how do I get enough clearance for getting the bottom bit out

I have a trolley jack... could I jack the front of the bike up enough for this or would it be too unstable

What a nightmare for one stupid little screw that was made of plastic

Any advice / help appreciated,

Take the back wheel off and lower the rear/raise the front (tie the stand to the leg you're not removing to stop it all collapsing)...would that give enough clearance?

Bad weekend to ask for techie advice they will all be full of beer and pig at the Raost

Jon, I did this recently myself. Take the whole lot off, lower fork bridge and fork sliders. I did this to replace a lower f/bridge for a similar reason (thread on brake hose support was shagged). I can give you the step by step instructions if that helps. Let me know. Cheers

Like the idea of removing the rear wheel as that would be safer than jacking up the bike.

If that fails I will send you a pm Big Lad for the alternative

Hi,
There is a Steptoe article on fork seal renewal, piece of cake, seek and ye shall find. The thing Iremember is that the forks get released from headstock, tilted forward and yanked out upwards. No dramatic yoga positions for poor old bike.

Well that was easy.... had the front fork out in 10 mins.

Managed to drive out the snapped tap from behind with a centre punch. I have recut the thread and although not perfect should hold the mudguard support.

Going to rub down and paint the fork lowers as they are starting to loose some paint.

New oil in both forks and that will be job done

Got a full day tomorrow now

ps... by taking out the slider the rest of the fork is removable by dropping it down with the bike on its centre stand so no bike aerobics.
