I have been told that there is foam behind the plastic cover at the front of the engine, supposedly for noise deadening!? I was also told that this piece of foam gets wet and stays wet...and should be removed; this will help stop the corrosion that is often seen in this area... Any truth to this?

I removed mine from my old 2005GS. I found the corrosion when I was cleaning the bike. You won't believe the crud that is there.

Took this cover off my 2009 gsa and lo and behold there isnt one fitted.

Don't mean to sound pessimistic, but with this sort of build quality, I think a bit of wet foam is neither here nor there

This is from 2007 GSA after 12 months.

Keep your eye out for the corrosion and at the first sign insist that the dealer replaces the cover.

front cover

Just had mine replaced and now it bloody leakes oil
I am not very happy.

Fit a fender extender on the front mudguard and spray bike liberally with WD 40 or similar. 24 months later and not a bit of corrosion on my R1200GS 2007 front cover :thumb (though do have a bit on my centre stand :rob )

+1 - only I used Waxoyl.

Are you using Waxoil just inside the cover, or generally on the engine covers?
I use FS365 and a similar product from Muc Off.... I have heard that ACF50 is good but "sticks like 5hit to a blanket"...

also the problem is there are no drain holes at the bottom of the cover so any water just collects there - i removed some maeterial from the edge of the cover either side of the lowest point

I took off the plastic cover when the bike was new, as I'd already read stories about corrosion and experienced similar on previous bikes' (Honda's, Yamaha's etc) forums and on here. I masked off the belt and thinned the Waxoyl with a little parafin. When put in a garden sprayer and dunked in hot water it sprays nicely. I sprayed the front of the engine cover, the underneath of the engine and around the bottom sides.

The sponge got binned.

I used Waxoyl as the surface behind the cover doesn't get washed and Waxoyl lasts longer than ACF-50, IMHO. In fact, there's Waxoyl still on the underside of the engine between the engine and the bash plate 2 years on.

One cavaet with all of this - the engine is covered in some kind of paint/lacquer that goes slightly yellow* when repeatedly sprayed with ACF and/or FS365 and the like. I don't care but some may complain in a few years. :augie You're damned if you do, damned if you don't kinda thing :thumb

*Some clever bloke on ADVRider wrote up exactly why this happens

Took the cover off mine a couple of years ago - no foam, think dealer removed it at PDI in 2005; no corrosion - put a bit of grease around bottom bolt area. Bike regularly cleaned, no corrosion whatsover.
