i stupidily decided to take my seat off to have a look at where to fit my battery charger lead after getting home off nights and now i cant for the life of me get the front seat back on right. spent 30 mins swearing at the thing and although it appears to be on now it doesnt look right.

the front end around the tank seems to have a gap bigger than before and feels like its flexing when you lift it up a little at the front.

how on earth do you get the seat back on properly. ? is it me making a meal of it or are they a pig to get back on.

It sounds like you've put it back on the higher setting (having been mounted on the lower one before.)
Keep the key turned in the lock (ie. the unlock position) as you're putting the seat into position. It will drop into the desired slot without having to exert pressure against the lock mechanism. (Same goes for the rear seat, IME.)

It's you making a meal of it:D

It sounds like you're trying to get the seat to locate on the high setting on the front and the low setting on the rear. If you look under the seat when you're trying to put it on, you can see the front mounts. Locate those, and then gently lower the seat and slide it gently backwards and it will drop in to place, then push it forwards.

Simples:thumb

Failing that, is the seat lock alright, as a lot of them get broken?

Have given up before I throw the seat through the window lol. On looking under the seat it looks Luke front on lowest setting but hard to tell. I'll try when I get up later

Welcome

To the black arts of the GS :)
Take your time and you will get it

As said earlier, always turn the key to the 'take the seat off' position when refitting the seats (especially the rear seat) and then release the key when the seat is properly down (don't just smack it into place with your hand with the lock closed).

It looks like you should just be able to push the seat down past the pawl on the locking bar (and indeed that was probably the design intention) but the locking bar is made of chocolate and will snap if abused. Mine was in several pieces when I bought it and is now held together with araldite and cable ties

eventually cracked it today when i had a fiddle and a clean of the bike.

think it was a combination of not fully unerstanding how the seat went on and tiredness. i did spray wd40 on the black seating bits which certainly helped to make it smoother.

my key doest always seem to turn so cant release the seats on occasion. is that a common problem

Wouldn't have thought so... I replaced mine with Adventure seat which I find more comfortable, but it has a different system for locking the seat. It is quite a business on the normal version - there's a long bar that connects the front and rear seat locking mechanisms, so you may want to give that a good clean up and small bit of grease. Might be as well to clean the lock barrel with some WD40 too, maybe there is some grit or something in the lock?

quite possibly well have a decent look at the weekend. seems to move fine when seats off

Come down to Adventure Bike Warehouse for a few lessons. :D Not open on Monday.

may well have to take you up on that. how much would a inspection service cost at your garage. im sure it would benefit from a good service
