Has anyone purchased their front wheel bearings from a bearing supplier rather than a motorcycle outlet?

Yep. Many times over the years. Just quote the number on the side of the black plastic bearing seal or take your old ones in to your local stockist. They'll probably have several makes and will be able to sell you the most durable, almost certainly for about half the price a BMW dealer will qoute. Dead easy job too.:)

Cheers, thought as much, I know that taper rollers for headstocks aren't available (or didn't use to be) but thought that wheel bearings probably are.

There are 2;different widths.I changed the narrower one, cost about £3 from a local bike shop.
The wider one maybe a BWM part only, you need to check numbers.
Which one has gone?.

Right hand, I check for play and roughness from time to time, nothing, fitted new tyres today so took the chance to feel the bearings by hand, Knackered and looks to have turned on the spindle, but when wheel back on, no roughness or diagonal play on wheel.

When I dimine last year found that (surprisingly) getting the bearings from the BMW dealer worked out a lot cheaper than I was quoted from bearing supplier recommended me by the local bike shop, so worth asking the question of them!

Good call, Ocean BMW cheaper than Motorworks and Braemer, (formally BSL) and both bearings were available. The bearing supplier couldn't tell me what the clearance on the original bearing, (the amount of room around the balls), I was told that the standard clearance was C2.5, but I had always thought that it was C2, with C3's being used for heavier loads, anyway, after being caught out once before when replacing the gearbox bearings I wouldn't have got them from the supplier.
Thanks for the replies.

I found my rear bevel bearing was not available from the bearing specialists in C3 and the BMW price was the same as them!:thumb2

What mileage are you changing at? Mine have 60,000 odd on of harsh use and seem fine?
