Front wheel bearings

My 1200 has just been MOT'd and flew through yet again:thumb

Anyway, the front wheel bearings are a bit rough even though I only replaced them in May. Saying that, we've done 17,000 miles in pretty tough conditions so I'm not bothered.

They were BMW OEM ones which are OK but does anyone know if there are better quality ones out there?
 
dont get me on about front bearings,bought my 05 gs from a dealer a year ago ,in no time they changed them as they spat gease all over the wheel,within 3000 miles did the same again,so i took them out,and stamped on them was made in poland,i replaced them from my local bearing place ,acorn bearings in washington tyne and wear ,i got high speed bearings they were thirty four quid for a pair,i think they were skf bearings,take the old ones into your place of purchase they have the sizes writen on them ,but dont buy cheap they dont last .
it has been writen before on this site about bmw using cheap polish bearings and to be honest i agree,bmw must use the cheapest crap they can get there hands on .
buy good quality and buy once.:thumb
 
Anything that spits grease out has probably been overfilled or the seals fell out. Either ways suspect quality control.

I've always used SKF sealed bearings from Derby Bearings for my bike wheels and never had a problem.

yes i agree,to be honest they were not just devoid of grease but also rumbling ,anyway an easy repair to do.
just out of interest the skf high speed bearings i put in said made in hungary.
is there nowt made in england any more.:rob

I'm collecting a brand new (£15,000) Adventure on Friday - is there anything else I need to know about?

My r100r (1992) has two carbs, some pushrods and a total of four valves. It lives outside under a cover.

Clearly this bike is as over-engineered as the modern stuff is under-engineered.

I hope I'm not about to be seriously disappointed. :confused:

To put it into perspective, my first set of bearings did 70k and the second set have been through the hammering of a lifetime so 17k was Ok in my mind:thumb
 
Here or here or loads of other places! Google the bearing size and you'll get loads of results! Stick to SKF or FAG and expect to pay around £5 each :thumb2
BTW the "2RS" bit of the code signifies "2 x rubber seals" as the type - don't get 6205 (no seals) or 6205-ZZ (steel seals).

£10,000? Really? That much .......

I suppose wheel bearings are a service item like pads, discs, rear shocks etc but my friend has been through three sets of steering head bearings on her f650 GS and instances of wheel bearing failures ( including catastrophically taking the rear wheel, disc and brake caliper with it in one case) are rife on the 800/700/750 section. Is this a design or quality issue?

So yes, for my 15k, I do feel entitled to have quality expectations.

I'm new to this Forum but not to BMW bikes or their dealers. This is actually my 5th GS and my 4th Adventure. Due to other commitments (elderly/alhzheimic parents, inlaws etc) I have not had the chance to pile miles on any of them. As retirement beckons I'm hoping that will change.

What I am a little wary of is surreptitious changes in their attitudes to quality, thin paintwork (as referred to elsewhere) and cheapskating on components etc

My main hobby is motorcycles and specifically BMW motorcycles. There is a certain pride of ownership with these bikes and once they shake that I would probably stop riding. I am hugely brand loyal and I accept other manufacturers (Honda in particular) make nice bikes too, but for me it's BMW or nothing.

I am their ideal customer but have always been treated extremely well by my dealer and, yes, that is Vines of Guildford. :clap
