Fuds that ride in groups

Oh god

My army reunion bike trip to France and Germany has obvioulsly been binned but determined to make the best of it and actually go somewhere and it appears to have fallen upon me to take them up to Scotland for a few days

I am not slow but i fear that some of the other 8 may not be the quickest or indeed the most competent, Despite the claims of riding God and iron butt status

Whilst I am looking forward to reuniting with some that i have not seen for 30 years i am full of dread for the riding part

The conclusion i have arrived at is i will be leading, they know the name and the place of the hotel so they can keep up ( within reason) or get left behind to make their own route and time

Does this sound harsh

Please forgive me if you come across us

Take them round Skye. The Waternish peninsula specifically. At least twice. Stop often to admire the views. :augie

If keeping up means going at a pace that they're not comfortable with, they'll welcome that approach rather than think it harsh.

Not at all.

I used to be the main leader on trips when we went on weekends away. As I was usually the organiser I took it personally to make sure everyone was counted out and in again and that they were all safe, a burden I almost enjoyed.

Then a time came where I was just starting to see far too much carnage, hopeless riding, accidents just waiting to happen, always looking in my mirrors hoping they made it round that corner. I always found it slightly strange why certain people never rode in our crowd and always did their own thing and then I discovered why.

I personally wouldn't ride in a group bigger than three now, seen far too much bad riding, more than my fair share of fatals so pretty much do my own thing now, go when I want, stop when I want, as fast as I want, as slow as I want.

mmhh

if you are riding in a group and you want to be in the front, just ride slow. if you dont want to ride slow dont lead or go in a group. not realy complicated.

Excellent idea and seconded :D

Oh and there's a lovely little Yurt thing near there where you can all pile in for tea and cake :D :D

Has the yurt got anything to do with Oonyak? I'll take a ride to there when we're up that way, thanks for the heads up

Thing is I didn't organise the original trip and was just going to ride at the back arsing about. Now it has all fallen on me to take them on a whistle stop trip round the highlands.

The original trip had us going out on the Chanel tunnel at 0750 hrs which meant e riding overnight to get there or getting a hotel and they didn't give a flying toss which

Now the southern softies are complaining about the same but in reverse and as a result we are losing a day so they can make their way north in relaxed and reasonable time.

When I take trips up there they are long hard and fast days

I am concerned

We'll be in Argyll & Bute by then, up in Strathpeffer prior to then.
Up with a good bunch of riders that don't need worrying about as we're all of similar abilities.
Had my fill of taking slower riders who insisted on riding at 'their' pace in the past. I used the same ethos as you and made sure we all knew where we were going and would see you there. It sorts itself out in the end and folks buddy up with those of similar pace/break requirements etc.

Like climbing...you never climb with someone you don’t know.

Sounds like a nightmare, Rick, as you obviously have different riding styles. Can’t you just meet them at the hotels each night and do your own thing during the days?

Everyone has their own pace, a speed with which they are comfortable and as safe as they can be(and there I much variation in that particular facet)
Any significant deviation from that speed compromises safety, perhaps, riding beyond one’s ability will end badly while going slow leads (for me at least), a loss of concentration.
I tend to ride with people I know and whose abilities I have faith in, the guy who was so slow doesn’t get invited anymore, we had a recently qualified rider but his approach was one of wanting to learn and improve his riding and he is very much up to pace, so no problem there. One other rider who was a friend of a friend and who was dangerous, is given a wide berth if he turns up on a ride. Although his riding appeared to have improved to a point where he actually goes around roundabouts now.........
