Morning Folks,
I have been mostly running my 78 R100RS on Shell V Power. This being based on their marketing claims that said fuel allegedly has some of the best engine/fuel system cleaning detergents. However, those with a career behind them in the oil refinery business seem to suggest this is all Shell marketing BS?

I have also been using Esso’s Synergy 99+ on basis is currently ethanol free down here in the south, although I understand that is to change September - when ethanol is to be added in line with other E5 fuels.

Am wondering if I would be better off using 87 RON super unleaded at E5 and adding a fuel/carburettor cleaner?

Any thoughts and recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

Two options, you can buy octane boosters so check either online or local car accessory shop / Halfords.

The other is look at other fuel companies, eg Esso Supreme where I used to live was Ethanol free, where I am now in north wales its 5% Ethanol. So its a regional policy , with all the boosters/ enhancements being made at the point of deliver.

The main issue I had with my classics was the hygroscopic effect of E5 in the winter. This led bikers I know to have carb jets corroded in. I personally had a tank pinhole at the fuel level eg half way up , so solved the problem by warming them up in Oct / Nov for a last ride, siphoning out all the fuel , then running the carbs dry.

Come first ride of Spring re fill with E5 and all three started up no drama.

Another option is Briggs & Stratton Fuel Fit available from most garden machine stores for about £4. Lots of commercial gardeners rune a dose of this through their machines before over wintering with success.
