Fuel cap pin

Has anyone managed to get the pin out of the fuel cap? Is there a secret to its removal? It's been dipped so no paint in the way but before it is resprayed to get a good coating I would like to get the two parts apart.

Either a C pin or plain pin with knurled ends to stop it coming out in use,but yes should be easy to carefully punch or push out.
