Fuel cap stuck

Im having the opposite problem, the cap opens easily enough but after filling (not overfilling) I cant close the lid. its doesnt clip into plsce,
I had to use a screwdrive to lever it down. Which I didnt like doing .. Any obvious fix? Its a 250GS '21

Yes the givi tank lock ring has Allen key's as well so make shore you keep the correct Allan key securely fixed somewhere on your bike .

Lol. Recently had a bit flak for talking about unnecessary tech! Hey ho.
Same silly cap on the KTM btw.

Keys eh, silly old things.
1st bike that I owned that was keyless was a 1200 multistrada. But then keys needed for panniers and seat removal. So easy (and frequent) to ride away with the key in the seat lock..
Both Ducati and BMW failed to start when keyfob battery got low. KTM key (and fob combined thing..) fell apart in my hand when trying to open the seat lock a few month back,. It actually even failed as key!

Remote central locking on cars is great, no messing with a key to get in, makes sense. Motorcycles are not cars!

Keyless ride dont you just love it! I've never understood the benefit or why people believe its an amazing advantage. For me its a pain in the arse.

Having said that i haven't yet had a problem opeing the fuel cap.

My gripe is the battery usage and where i keep the key away from the bike and multiple bike jackets. Also losing the keys once after they fell out my pocket whilst riding.

The times i've got all set up to go, my flat and garage is all locked up, jump on the bike to go then realising the key is still indoors

I've often wondered if the igniton and tank cap can be swapped out to a keyed one?
I have seen that you can buy a keyed ignition switch for R1250GS but not sure if it can be ordered for my specific key that is the same as my seat lock or you would have to swap out all locks. So never persued it.

Tech - for tech,s Sake !
A load of utter nonsense !
It one of the reasons I just kept on going with my 13 plate twincam ,, I has just enough electroniky stuff to make it work - - and NO more !

Anyone else had this on an R1300GS? I had my running in service yesterday and on the ride home I knew I’d need fuel. I pulled up with 24 miles left and couldn’t get it to unlock, no matter what I tried. This is only about the 4th/5th time I’ve put fuel in it and on a couple of occasions it didn’t open, then did. I thought I was maybe doing something wrong, but it never played up on my R1250GS.
Anyway, knowing about removing the two front screws I was able to get in and fill up, using the tool kit under the seat. I’d just told the service desk that morning that everything was fine, no problems.
Another excuse to ride over to West Yorkshire.
I’d not seen this reported on the list of R1300GS problems anywhere.
Same happened to me.. cap would not open lucky enough had a 60 mile range so on way home called into the dealers where I bought the r1300 gs from.. tech said.. I know what's wrong you have fitted a sw motech quick release tank bag.. told him I've used this sw motech tank bag on 2 previous bmw r1250 gsa and r1250 rs both with the same keyless cap.. so he removed the tank bag and the sw motech tank ring and replaced the 4 bolts with oem bolts and the cap opened first time which he did 4 times.. I help myself to a free coffee and a nice piece of cake.. then noticed on a new r1300 gs triple black was a genuine bmw adventure Large expandable 11 to 16 ltrs tank bag olive with black accents look well on the triple black also designed for the gs sloping tank was surprised when he said it's on sale for less than half price for £119.00 with all carrying straps.. also included is the harness tank attachments "which are sold separate" he even fitted it while I had another coffee and cake:) I still use the sw motech tank bag with the the sw motech quick release plate seat attachment on my speed twin. still not sure if the cap would not open due to the sw motech tank being fitted or I did not use the correct r1300 gs opening procedure stated in the owners manual:unsure: but all ended well as the sw motech tank bag on the r1300 gs didn't look right with the sloping tank.

also I've that problem.. I just press down hard on the cap while keeping pressed down.. then press the clip down to lock into place.. works fine now.. will agree never had the problem of the cap not opening or the clip locking into place on either my previous r1250 gsa or r1250 rs.. must be the r1300 gs is very sensitive..

I have to say one thing about the 1300 gas cap, and the same for the previous 1250. The spring loaded latch is very stiff and very unsatisfying to close. On my 1250 and the 1300 it is actually scoring and wearing on the lip it's latching to. My 1200 and 1260 Multistrada were beautiful to close with light satisfying click. I'm unimpressed with the BMW gas cap mechanism.

Why would anyone buy a motorcycle whose owners manual needs to state how to open a petrol cap... on 20k+ bike?
This is a rhetorical question btw
I know the answer!

What does the price of the bike have to do with anything? Why are you posting on a BMW GS forum?

ah to enlighten a newbie!

Usually, quality engineered components cost money.

You may want to wait a few more years and pay your subs before asking more daft questions.

I agree with you that Treb's question was daft.
Simply put, you read the manual to understand how the gas cap interlock system works. When you buy a 20k+ bike these things are explained in the manual. You don't have to thank me for this, I'm glad to help. (y)
