Fuel consumption query on a newly acquired R1150GS

So if I drain all the oil out will I be able to get to Steptoes aunt Mabel's on less than a gallon of petrol????????????

You can get to Aunt Mabel's on less than a gallon of oil. Usually you can get anywhere on less than a gallon of oil unless you've got a drinking problem.

I'm not sure about that, but you should be able to get from A to B.

I can get from A to B on a about a half tank, but to get to C takes less than a 1/4 ???

I tried going the short way, but it's a longer distance.

If i go from a bit to the north of newdigate to just west of Overington it's about a 3/4 of a tank, maybe a bit less if i'm using the medium sized tank, could be a bit more if the xx large tank. .

All these calculations are immaterial as you have not factored in the biggest variable. You get different MPG with the large compared to normal tank.

When I had an 1150GS I got 49-55 mpg (dependent on temperature and twitchy wrist) over a period of more than 11000 miles.

Absolutely Fabulous

This is brilliant. The closest I've ever seen to a "talking absolute bollocks" game for all the family. A thread combining mpg AND oil pontification in one!

I'm so happy - if anyone can weave in a bit about "the best tyres for my bike are...." I'll be in thread heaven.

Well it's intersting you make that point as I have found that running knobblies on my 1150 gives about 7MPG better fuel economy than when running Tourances. I put this down to the reduced contact patch with the road and therefore reduced friction that the knobblies provide.

Of course, your milage may vary...

Replaced cat with Y piece, now returns about 50MPG.

Would you mind being a bit more specific please Colban, not exactly sure how to go about this, are aftermarket parts available? didnt check the air filter either, will do so this weekend :thumb

Thanks...........Charles

A y-piece replaces the catalytic convertor. They're all aftermarket - Remus, Motad and various other companies make them. Pretty easy to fit but of course you need to swap the lambda sensor over from the cat to the y-piece.

Just about any company that sells BM bits will stock y-pieces (Motorworks, Motobins, Nippy Normans etc) and there are loads on eBay too, new and used. Oh, and usually there are some for sale on here - check the For Sale section.

Benefits are lower weight (not that it makes much difference on something the weight of a GS....) and better gas flow leading to slightly improved performance and fuel consumption. Exhaust volume will increase slightly.

Fuel consumption

Surely the MPG is directly linked to oil viscosity?
The more viscous the oil the more resistence offered to the pistons, therefore the more miles per gallon used, as the engine works harder to push the pistons around.....??? :D

This is what happens when you use out of date oil.

I now realise that most of this thread has passed so far over your head you wouldn't have even heard the whistle as it passed over.

The ambiguity in variables stems from the very first post

, guessing from a half to 2/3rd of a tank of juice from Urlingford to just west of Cork,

Where the feck is Urlingford ?, how many miles to cork ?, how far west from/past cork ? what sized tank? - half to 2/3 ?, and the amount is a guess. :blast :clap

A classic a variable as variables can possibly get.

Opps sorry, what a boob boo

Thought this was an Irish forum :aidan

Urlingford to Cork is about 80 miles, ill be doing a run this weekend and report back with more accurate figures and try and forget its not the Harley im on, promise ill slow down a bit :D

All jokes aside, your comments are most welcome and helpful, cheers & have a good weekend all, off to Limerick in a little while, Co Clare tomorrow, The five pilots monument, Kilbaha, Loop Head for the 2010 photorally tomorrow P.G
