Hi Folks,

I've got a concern regarding fuel consumption. my gs is only doing 30-40 mpg at present which is starting to become an expensive business. today i saw 19 litres disappear into the fuel tank only to find that it lasted for 185miles. I have a daily 8 mile round commute coupled with 20 mile trip to town at least twice a week. i'm averaging 170 miles a week on the bike and i have not seen the 'magical' 50mpg. other folk have told me they regulary get 50 mpg. my old sv650s was regulary seeing 50-60mpg doing the same journeys before i retired her for the gs.

what is the average mpg that other gs'ers are achieving? does a faulty ECU play havoc with the fuel consumption? it's the only thing i can think of.

thanks

40mpg for me too, seems about right

to get 50mpg, i think i would have a very light throttle hand, or a long un-panniered ride

Your 650 was that. A 1150 is 1130cc a heck load heavier so you won't see 50-60mpg from it. 45mpg seems to be going well.

Do you have a y-piece or after market exhaust. Have you looked up the steptoe cat code - both could affect the mpg.

IIRC i got low to mid 40s on my 1150.

mid to high 40s on the 1200. never seen 50mpg over a complete tankful on either bike, and suspect i'd have to ride like a total jessie to do so.

Your getting 44-45 which seems about average. Sv's are very economical. I went out on my wifes with a friend a few years ago....he was on a Firestorm we did about 370-380 miles he averaged 34 and I averaged 55 same route same speed. I once got 59mpg two up in Norway on my 1150 but a petrol station I was depending on was closed and I spent the last 90 miles to the next station slipstreaming a coach at 45-50mph to eek out the fuel!!:D

Getting about 45mpg on my 1150adv which seems about right. I could probably get 50 if I tried but enjoying my riding and dont want to get bogged down whith economy.

Yip 10 miles per litre is about right. Any more and it's a bonus. As you are mixed riding with soem town, it will dip a little. Also racing off the lights or popping big wheelies will bring it down. Some people ride for MPG, others just ride and see at the end so stories of 55-60mpg will appear. I met a guy once who said he had 75mpg out of his F650 which seemed a little far fetched until he took me into the world of obsession that got him there!:D

i have to admit that i once got 90mpg from the sv650s. to be fair she was restricted at the time, i left belfast for the dublin boat and got to newry and filled her up cause i wasnt sure if the petrol station in dublin would be open at 1am. i opened the filler cap to find a lot fuel there - like it had drunk nothing. filled it to the lip - £2.50 worth for the 50 miles i'd travelled which worked out at 90mpg!!! i was well happy - a theoretical tank range of 342miles on 16 litres!

Solo riding in a spirited manner(no luggage) 42 to 45 mpg
Two up touring on autobahns (heavily laden) averaging 80 to 90 mph between 44 to 47 mpg
Two up bimbling around the alps sightseeing and keeping the speeds down to legal limits 49 to 55 mpg

Every big trailie I've owned seems to get about 10 miles to a litre.

Oh for the days of filling up for £8 on a 125cc commuter and not seeing a petrol station for weeks :D

There is a big difference if you keep the speed to 50-60 rather than 70 +. i know this 'cos i get bored stiff with M-ways so head into the country down some good small roads! Also 'cos i am more of a boring bastard than i used to be and the GS is a torquey scrather (Better on the pegs at 60 than straight line at 100+:D). Last year I rode many miles on the "mainland" and my speed honesty is linked to my camera paranoia!

In the early 90's when a London courier I filled up my XJ9 Yam with a tank at about £10 only to see the C90 pizza boy on the next pump fill with £1.50!

I rode like a saint around London for a fortnight while suffering some severe licence difficulty and upped the mpg from 35 to 50 mpg. Got cut up at some lights by a van and raced off giving him the finger only to get nicked again around the next corner:eek::mad: And no the copper didn't have sympathy...

Keeping panniers on will drop your mpg. I know from experience that I get better fuel mileage without them & my average is the magic 10 miles/litre. I have seen my Adv tank empty after just 165 miles in the past, though - I ran out of fuel as I waited to turn right, into the petrol station... :P :augie

The garage attendant had to double check my £30 bill & the woman next to me who'd just put £10 in her 3-series. She got some gentle ribbing off the other riders around me (she was definite tottie...) about swapping bills to save her embarrassment... :D

Hmm, my best is 58mpg (imperial) on an 1150 GS, two up with luggage. Mind you, this was in Swaziland where the limit is 80kph and it's wise to stick to that due to the kids, livestock logging trucks etc all over the place.
