Fuel Consumption

My computer says 49.3 mpg over 6500mls. If I was getting less than 40 I would be asking questions. I use V power every fill, love the smell of it!:thumb

U got a missfire.?

Hi, 2011 GSA with 7.5k & it's averaging 47mpg & as I was anal when I first got it I checked the milage against the fuel receipts & over a few thousand miles, I can confirm my trip computer is deadly accurate (I was amazed).

I had rough running at about 1000 miles & average was dropping to near 40mpg, Pidcocks had it in & changed the spark plugs, I was thinking "I'll be taking this back" but no, correct diagnosis & runs good now.

Mixture of riding on a, b & Europe which I think was mostly fully loaded with panniers at speed..
The panniers are NOT aerodynamic.

I could get 50mpg average but I would need to be careful, which I'm not...

Enjoy.. Can't wait for the summer..! :D

Changing from my 1150 to the 1200 showed a 10% improvement in fuel consumption. There is a certain person in Canada with 2 1150's who refuses to accept the 1200 is more fuel efficient.

September 2011 rode 700 miles down through France with luggage and had an indicated 53mpg ... I did keep it around 70mph though ....

On the way back up'd it to around 85mph on main road and mpg dropped to high 40's ...

Oh riding 2010 GSA with 6k on the clock ...

Have you thought about putting Diesel in ?? .. I hear you get better MPG with that stuff .... :thumb

'08 1200GSA, mixed A and B road riding, sometimes fast, sometimes slow = 10 to 11 miles per litre. Bit less in winter or if I go on a motorway which I avoid if possible. The OBC is not as reliable as a petrol station meter so best work it out based on the trip mileage and the fuel you put in on the forecourt.

fuel

54 to 57 , ran to empty once and did 270 mile took 22 litres to fill to brim again 07 1200gs

Take a look at this site to get a true idea of actual fuel consumptions
http://www.fuelly.com/
The on bike computer readings are a waste of time.

Thanks: just signed up and added the last few fill ups - seems the OBC is spot on. Useful to know - it means I won't get home without a fill up this week!

Mmm - joking aside I do find I need to kick it down a couple of gears for the 50-70 overtake - it seems particularly gutless at low revs compared to the 1150

Mate there's definitely something wrong with your bike get down to the dealer. If you're doing Motorways and A roads cruising less than 80 you should be getting 50+

2010 T/C GSA 50/51 mpg happy with that :) and has been the same since new.

Twin cam gsa 49.4 in mixed riding first 800 miles. not sure its ever shown anything else tho! No issues with high gear accelaration, feels quick.

Yours does appear to be one of the worst entries on fuelly. Must be something wrong?

Fuel consumption

2010 tc GSA. 12,000m 47mph, nearly all two up with panniers fully loaded plus top box and camping gear. 90plus on motorways and toll roads.

Your does consumption seems very high. Think you have enough evidence in the responses to enable you to suggest politely :robto the dealer that all is not well

Dealer was forewarned at the 600mile service that there might be something amiss but at that stage I was not sure exactly what the consumption was, nor what to expect

Will call them today

Update

Got stuck in the blizzard of Friday night - had to check into a hotel. But some interesting data came from the incident

Stuck at 60 mph on the M25 the bike reported 55 mpg, at 70 it drops to 40 mpg

Borrowed the dealers demonstrator for comparison to it for a 30 mile round trip and ...

* for the outward journey (15 miles) it reported 40@70 an 55@60 just the same as mine

* ok, I think, so all 1200s are crap time to get shot of it! BUT what speed exactly does this fuel economy crash so I wind it up slowly ... 55@60 ... 53@65 ... 48@70 (WTF!) ... 45@75 ... so, I think, could this be engine temperature related ... perhaps mine has a duff temperature sensor and is dumping excess fuel because it thinks the engine is cold

* back to the dealer, who are meanwhile fixing my heated grip problem, report my experience

Dealer checks throttle balance (spot on), checks the temperature sensor (seems to be working but in retrospect temperatures I saw on the report seemed low - don't know conditions of test), and installs the latest software

And the result ... well it's a totally different bike - fuel consumption appears to be better (too early to make an accurate call) but finally the engine has some punch in the mid range

OK I know I'm opening myself to all sorts of abuse by starting a new fuel thread but I have a serious question

I recently traded in my old 1150 GSA for a brand new 1200 GSA. First impressions were that fuel consumption was poor then it improved marginally - a trend I was hoping would improve as the engine loosened up but now it has taken a huge dive. Currently it is indicating 36 mpg! That's less than 8 miles per litre - the 1150 was turning in 10 or more.

I'm assuming that is not normal - if it is, it will be up for sale pretty soon. It means I can't reliably do my 260 mile commute without a refill and it will cost me at least £500 per year extra in fuel

So questions:

1. What mpg figures are others getting? I want an indication of how far off the norm this is

2. does consumption improve significantly with use?

More info - currently about 1500 miles on the clock - commute is a steady high speed (less then 80) trek on A roads and motorways
I dont have a 1200GS now, but when I did (mine was a 60 plate) it was returning a pretty steady 52 MPG. i didnt have to treat it gently to get that figure either. But then again I didnt redline it in every gear..... The worst figure I saw in mine, which was a twin cam would have been about 44. Sounds like you might want to have it looked at when you get a chance. Fuel consumption should get better with miles ISTR. Good luck with it, and let us know what your dealer says...

I'm guessing that the very cold weather may be playing a part in the poor fuel economy as I have noticed my BMW car fuel economy drops off drastically in cold weather compared to the more mild and (the very occasional hot) days.

Just a thought......
