When filled to the throat is the mileage range displayed to reserve? It shows 160 but presumably the bike is good for 200 so I assume the 160 is to reserve or else the countdown isn't very accurate?

Been wondering the same, I think the countdown is until reserve hit but couldn't say for sure.

after a fill up the total will go up slowly depending on how you ride then settle down and start to fall.

As far as I know it's total range to empty but bear in mind it's based on your average fuel consumption prior to filling.

I filled mind today having ridden steady for a while as I didn't know where the next station was, the range was showing 15 miles remaining and it took 18.89 litres so its not to bad. After filling range showed 218 miles.

I assume that it's total range to empty - mine shows about 215miles when brimmed.

Whilst out last weekend I ran mine down to 0 on the DTE and then did another 6 miles on the A1 at a constant 85.

Filled up and got 20.36ltrs in but I have removed the 70mm filler extension

DTE then said 190 miles!

Could you let me know how you removed the filler extension as I to find it a pain in the arse

Simples, remove the centre panel covering the tank, then remove the screws holding the filler cap in place and lift the filler assembly, you don't need to pull of the drain tubes.

The 70mm extension is on a simple bayonet fitting - you should be able to see how much you need to turn it and direction.

Replace the parts and Roberts your mothers brother!

It should allow the tank to fill quicker for the last couple of Ltrs and give a little more capacity as it reduces the air lock. As mentioned I got 20.36 ltrs in mine I'm expecting its 21-22 ltrs really (my 1200 actually took 23!)

Just remember not to fill it to the brim before leaving the bike on the side stand!

If you want to get even more fuel in to can drill a vent hole further up the filler neck but below the seal line.

At some point I'm going to do a run to dry and fill up test!

Off to the Thundersprint this weekend which is 240 miles from me so hoping to do it on a tank full... Fingers crossed!

:-)

Jonny, my guess is that the sensor wasn't designed to spot the higher fuel level when it worked out the 190 miles based on your average before fill up, unless of course you have been enjoying the extra performance of this engine. Full marks if so!
Did the Range stay static for a while until the sensor started to sense fuel within its design range?
I would have thought you would have got more than the extra 0.36ltrs without the filler extension but maybe the 20 litre capacity quoted by BMW is not precise or it depends on if the bike's on the side or mainstand when filling up.
I'll stop there because my brain hurts.
I'm interested to know if you have seen any downsides of filling it higher e.g. spills from the vent tubes? If not I'm tempted to do the same, extra range is always welcome.
Cheers

Hi Alp

Two reasons why it was only showing 190 miles. 1 it was after the first service 2. I'd just talked my best mate in to taking out a demonstrator GS for a test and we'd done a mix of A and B roads we know.

Suffice to say..... I was going like the perverable banshee!!!

Yes, after we slowed up a little it displayed over 200 miles!!

BWM obviously don't want it removed, on the 2006 bikes it was a simple rubber insert that you pull out with one finger, and they call it progress?

Yep there was just a pull out and I agree it was easier however, that was I think only a 40mm or less restrictor which could have been there not only to stop the over fill but also to stop you putting the wrong fuel in. The actual restrictor was the metal filler neck which you couldn't remove so that needed drilling to reduce the air lock height.

To remove the new ones 70mm tube is 5 min job, no big deal for anyone that can be bothered..

Welcome to the wonderful world of the BMW fuel guage!

The good news is they have at least reverted back to a float design after the disaster of the digital strip on the later 1200 Hexheads.
Best advice is to run it as low as possible before filling up, this seems to make it more consistent & wises you up on how far you can push it.
Set the trip & work on 200 miles before looking for fuel ... 250 miles can be acheived on the twin cam at a push - I guess the WC is much the same if not better? :thumby:

I wanted to know tank capacity and distance from range showing zero and can confirm I covered 7 miles before engine started to cough. Put a measured two litres in tank then rode approx 1 mile to fuel station. Filled tank into neck (I've removed the extension pipe) and got 19.26L so total 21.26L or thereabouts.

Actual MPG was 52.6 so computer is a little optimistic.

BTW Fuel used Shell V power.

BTWW. I seem to remember someone saying cruise won't engage when near empty. My bike will and cruise was normal right down to 0 range.

I have always assumed it is total range to empty - when I brim my tank I typically get a range reading of about 220 miles.

Nice one... Still haven't got round to doing the test but now you have, I'll take your word for it...21-22 ltrs seems about right.

I was out at the weekend and brimed to nearly empty 230 miles on the trip still fuel in the tank.

Some times.... This site can be helpfull :thumb2

What's it like on V power, as I've just been using normal unleaded 95, as per the recommendation?
