OK, so I took the tank off, had it re-sprayed and re-mounted the internals.
Now the fuel light is always on even with a full tank and the indicator says empty.
So I took it all out, checked the wires were plugged in, cleaned the slider with a rubber to remove any carbon deposits and made sure nothing could foul the flotation arm when I put it all back in.
Same thing, warning light on and zero bars.
The tank is a Touratech so the internals are modified but it's all worked fine for over a year.
I put the original tank back on and that works fine, so the problem is somewhere in the TT tank.
I don't know what to check next.
Any suggestions?

I think so. I just slid it in towards the lobe at the front of the tank. I made pretty sure nothing is catching on it and that it was the right way up
