Hi I am in Spain on my 2010 GSA. Fuel gauge is gone on the blink again. The bike is out of warrantee. It has had 3 replacement fuel thingy's
Does anyone know what is the latest info on this issue? I would take it to a dealer but what have BMW done to sort the issue?
I find it a real hassle riding without a working low fuel warning and i end up carrying loads of fuel if i get my usage calculations wrong. I hate having a Amarillo triangle on the dash all the time.
Whats wrong with BMW i had the same issue with my 06 GSA?
They could have stuck a mechanism from a Ford Fiesta in there and it would have worked better.
Thanks

Nothing has changed in the any way for a fix. The last of the bikes have a float again but it cant be fitted on the older bikes. Use the trip and the MPG or pay to get it fixed and you will get another 2 year warranty on it.

Yep its a right load of she-ite isn't it? Mine has had the same issue and I refuse to replace it with having seen that many posts say its pointless as they just go again.

I am going to take it to bits when i get back home to my workshop and see what makes it tick. I will also inquire if BMW can switch the triangle warning off. Its not to bad with a bike with a 20L capacity, you just brim it every time and zero it but with the 33L you have to accurately calculate your MPG or you end up carrying too much fuel around, I cannot run out completely due to the few liters that reside on the other side of the tank and can be accessed by tipping the bike up on the side stand. A load of nonsense on such a good motorcycle.

I recently had my 2008 GSA fuel strip replaced and recalibrated.

£200.

For a strip of plastic and 5 minutes with a laptop.

Shite.

We have some fantastic mechanical engineers on the panel. Have we got any electronics experts on here who can make up a retrofit system that actually works?

how do you tell if your bike has a float sender or a strip????, mines a 2011, so ide be intrested to find out, but ive had no problems so far, touch wood:augie

I believe the wet strip type fuel sender was invented to provide the tank level info to the fuel computer rather than just use the original float type design of the first 1200 models. If your bike has the computer, it probably has the strip.

My local dealer informed me when I had mine replaced recently that they started using the more simple float type level sender again instead of the wet strip around 2010 (but didn't say if that included the bikes with the fuel computer or not.)

Pat, there was a thread over on ADVrider where someone had success in hitting the strip with a high voltage from a Megger, which apparently rewelded the broken track on the level sender strip.

I wouldn't recommend doing this on the strip if it is still in the fuel tank, 500Volts could make a pretty big spark and you can guess the risks involved.

enter your frame number into this parts finder site http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do and it will steer you to the diagram/list for your particular model.
the diagram for those models with a strip, show a strip. Those with a float, show ...... well you get the idea.

Where in Spain are you Pat ? I arrive in Malaga on wednesday.

Fuengirola, i had a month of 18 to 22 deg weather, it has turned a bit some showers and the winds up, we had a great day today pottering in the hills, stunning views and a bit of craic at the bikers bar in Torreblanca,
Will you have a moto with you?
I am living in my American RV
