Fuel Gauge fault

I've had my GS from new since 2005, and the fuel gauge has always been reliable - up until now. Recently, its become indecisive, and is up and down like a tart's knickers.

After brimming the tank, it'll show full for a while, then suddenly drop to half ful, then briefly back up to full, and so on. I have not done anything to suddenly affect it, and I've had the fuel sender connection off and cleaned it, to no effect.

Is a new fuel sender needed or is it "a feature"? I do use my trip counter, but I'm bemused as to why the fault should suddenly develop - anyone?

According to my BMW dealer, it's a common problem - he says that since mine's working OK at the moment, there's no need to fix it. See this thread for more information: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=234784
