Fuel gauge gone again to day, 2010 GSA

A tad harsh....and I think missing the point. I am "moaning" about a £12K motorcycle where there is a known problem that the mighty BMW seem reluctant to fix.
I would add that Vines Guildford, as ever, have offered great service for which I am grateful.

Fair point but at least the dealer is sorting it out.

A lot of vehicles have known faults which are hushed up by dealers and just get fixed. It's probably cheaper for them to do that then redisign the who shebang because a small percentage fail.

Update

I'll get onto the dealer asap but I wonder if I'll get the same experience as others who have posted on this thread.:drool

Watch this space....

New sender fitted by Cotswold Motorrad under warrany without having to ask. Didn't reset until I filled up 50 miles later though which was a bit disconcerting en route...

Hopefully fixed, but for how long...?:nenau

Here's a bit of info I managed to obtain the other day.
If you've got an Adventure and you only fill it up halfway from empty (ie below the dividing bridge inside the tank) it will not be accurate until its filled just over halfway. Something to do with how the film sensor interprets the amount of fuel in the tank.
Fill it completely & it'll work as it should.

I had a brand new Triumph Sprint that the fuel gauge went on, took it back with a brake problem and mentioned it. It went round to the service department, they bought it back after an hour said everthings checked. Rode bike of, still had the problem, so I went straight back. Workshop manager said "We will fix it on the next service" I said, "give me your mobile number then" he said "why?" I said, "when I run out if f@@king fuel at 2 in the3 morning, your the bastard Im calling to bring me some". Funnily enough they found time in the workshop there and then!! BMW are not on their own!!

Brought my 2008 GS second hand last year got an hour down the road and filled up (gauge was working fine at this point) filled her to the brim and continued for another hour on the motorway.... the gauge was stuck on empty all the way and its now knackered warning triangles and all :eek

I've been using the Sat Nav fuel gauge (set to 300 miles) which tells me when the tank will be empty when I have 30 miles to go.

My 3 year warranty runs out in March so im going to get them to sort it out before it expires.

Arse

Hopefully fixed, but for how long...? :nenau

Answer?

Not very long... In fact it never settled down. Did 280 miles going up and down to Les W up in Congleton and by the time I got back down to Cheltenham, it still showed an available range of 260 miles. I know they ain't bad on gas but that was too good to be true so I bottled out and filled up.

It took 29 litres... hmmmm. :augie

Off to Cotswold for recalibration then! (this thread could run and run....):rob

Once I put in 5l and the gauge remained unchanged in terms of range! .

It says this in the handbook somewhere that when you fill up you have to put enough fuel in (can't remember what this was) in order for the fuel guage to respond/read accurately.
Unless you've got very little cash and no card on you I don't understand folk that don't fill the tank up ad only put a splash in, you're only going to have to go back and put more in. Just fill it up and save yourself several trips to the petrol station :thumb2

I'm not holding my breath either, got mine fixed last week under the "Extended Warranty"

The BMW tech said Germany knows its a major problem but just instruct them to replace the magnetic strip...

no fix is being looked into either, apparently on the newer 2011 models they have gone back to the older float system instead of the magnetic strips :nenau

my bike ran out the other day when the fuel light had been on for only 8 miles and the range said I had over 30 miles left until empty. Unfortunately, I had only had the bike, my first BMW, for 2 days and hadn't yet read on here about the fuel gauge problems. You wouldn't expect a brand new £13k 1 series BMW to have a faulty fuel gauge and neither would I with an equivalent costing motorbike. I spoke to the dealer and they said they'd 'recalibrate' the fuel strip.

The only way BMW will rectify this issue on future bikes is if we make enough fuss about it.

Great - I get to join this not so exclusive club :(

Took my 2010 GSA out this morning with the yellow warning triangle showing, the word 'FUEL' sowing on the display, no bars showing on the fuel guage but apparently still 100+ miles worth according to the 'Range' reading.

Duly filled up to the brim with 25 litres - still the warning triangle, bugger all bars, 'FUEL' still showing and now just dashes for the 'Range'. :blast

What's the 're-calibration' thing all about? Is that a two minute dealer plug in thing or something more complicated? And what about the 'strip replacement' method?

Welcome to the club, I cant tell you what the process is, I claimed under the extended warranty, my closest BMW garage is an hours ride away(one way). You have to agree to an hours labour so they can investigate the problem...if its not covered under warranty you have to pay the hours labour (£68) If it is faulty you then have to make a second appoitnemt and the work carried out under your warranty (free).

HOWEVER

In total I paid about £60 to get it fixed under warranty, £15 for a hire bike on 2 seperate occasions from BMW and petrol to the BMW garage and home 4 times about £8 per visit.

I'm not getting charged by Cotswold for my recalibration next week. And they have given me a courtesy bike... Quite bloody right as well! :agree

Have u asked if the courtesy bike is free ? I asked and was told the £15 was for the insurance, the bike however is free :augie

I need to get mine in again under warranty, the side light/fog switch is turning its self off all the time

Dunno?

Thanks, I'll check...

The good news - and the bad news...

Cotswold said that if the bike was having warranty work undertaken, there would be no charge whatsoever for the courtesy bike. Got the gauge recalibrated and have been running fine ever since the beginning of the month - until Sunday.:(

I got within about 12 miles of home when the fuel warning came on and gave me a range of 41 miles till dry. This ticked down to 28 miles at which point the engine died about one mile from my house. It was at the top of a hill so managed another 500 yds freewheel before I had to give up and walk - which was far enough in proper Tosser gear I can assure you!:censor:

Then had the joy of getting fuel can out driving to the station, back to the bike, get bike home, walk back to car etc, etc.

So now I know when the fuel warning comes on, it means "your f**ked!" Back to the trip then :augie

:comfort

Dont know what else to say, mine is still working okay for now... but ive not really had to fill it back up since it was done... I need to go get the tank low and refill to see if it works

Glad you didn't have to pay anything, I will defiantly question them next time

And I guess it was good you ran out only a mile away, imagine being 100 miles away.

Just changed my GSA. Old one's fuel gauge.wasn't bad - I'd had it down to 6 miles range before.

Get on the new one to do a 25 mile journey. Two bars showing on the gauge, 90 miles showing on the range. 20 miles later still one bar and 70 milrs showing splutter splutter cough cough on a busy dual carriageway. BMW assist were great though - as always!
