Fuel gauge gone again to day, 2010 GSA

Mines been faulty for about 3 years and the reading seems to have drifted a little more just recently. I’m waiting for Hexcode to make the GS-911 be able to do fuel gauge calibration then I may replace the sensor myself (and I might not bother, because it'll only go again unless they re design it).

+1.

I haven´t try GS911 since problem occur, but I guess no fault code appear by now.

By the way, it is not a very common issue in Spain. If some of you can read it, our club/forum www.gstrail.es, you wont get much about this problem.

Fuel gauge packed in on Thursday last week, thought fill up with fuel it may correct itself, no joy there, 2009 Gs1200 SE done 9500 miles, not happy over weekend as bike just two months out of warranty. Phoned Steve at SBW Mottard Hertford today asked if they could do anything, no problem, "bring it in and as good will gesture we will sort it".

Top guys

Fingers crossed it lasts for more than 2 years next time.

Strange one . . .

Set off on Sunday with fuel light on, and 20 miles to go!
Filled up to the brim at local station and I was on my way :JB
After 120 miles I switched computer to miles to go & was informed I had 100 miles left, which was bang on the money in my book. From that moment on the range started climbing, and after 185 miles I still had 207 miles left & full bars on the gauge?
I filled up with 16.5 litres to the brim again, and reset the average speed / MPG functions.
The 80 miles home it stayed on 207 miles to go & only started to drop about 10 miles from home when I caned it.
It is now on 192 to go after 80 miles which is almost possible bearing in mind I took it steady home in the dark on Sunday night.
So whether there was a problem or still is a problem remains to be seen?

The question I want to ask is shall I get the dealer to re-calibrate it or is it just not worth the hassle & live with it . . I don't think they will replace it as it's not bust?

One other question; Like I said I put 16.5 litres in, so tank probably not empty enough to knock the light on?
Would the fuel light still come on EVEN if the gauge has a full house of bars & the range showing 200m to go?

Welcome to the club,,,

Mine doesn't but there again, who knows#? :nenau

Not BMW for certain!:blast

if the gauge is still showing fuel then it will not show the warning light. Range and the warning light is all a product of the fuel gauge and if thats bust then none of it will be accurate. The MPG readout has nothing to do with it though and if reset on the tank fill should be pretty accurate (mine is even though the gauge is US) so that along with the trip will give you a good indication of where your fuel is along with some mental arithmetic. You could just use your trip but if your anything like me I can get anywhere between high 30's to high 50 MPG. Unless you pick a low safe mileage then you could still run out.

Thanks!
I'm not going to stress about it, just go by the magic 200 on the trip!
I might just mention it the week before the warranty runs out?

Of all the GS12 issues, this is the one to be struck with in my view. I'm not saying it's right, but you can work round it.

. . . to my earlier post!
After reading another thread about the exhaust flap, it seemed my flap was indeed making a feeble squeak instead of a positive thud. On one occasion it was beeping at me, so I sprayed it up and the whole thing improved slightly.
But I thought with winter coming, with all the salt'n'shit that goes with it, I would get it checked out. So I booked it in for the faulty fuel gauge, with the intention of mentioning my flap.
So, I took it in this morning & they gave me an F800R loan bike. As I pulled away I was told "don't trust the fuel gauge it's faulty" which made oi larf!
A bit later on I got a phone call from BMW saying that despite being a 2010 twin-cam, it had actually got a float system in it, but it had fallen apart! :blast
Anyway, new float assembly and exhaust flap being fitted next week, so hopefully that should sort the 2 latest 1200 gremlins?

Good service from BMW by the way! :clap

I have a 1150GS and i am thinking of getting a 1200GSA but after reading on here different things going wrong i dont know my other choice was the 1200RT do they have the same problems with the fuel gauge just a thought

It's only the 10 bikes affected! Mine is a Feb 10 and has a float assembly, as do the latest bikes! :thumb

Rumour has it BMW are working on a "retro fit" to replace existing digital strips with a float?
The F800R loan bike I was given had a faulty gauge also, so pretty much across the range I suspect. ;)

AS above, this is the third time its gone in 6K miles :(:(:(:(:(

Its a pain in the backside having time off work to get it fixed for the same fault. :blast

What will I do when its out of warranty :nenau

I will be on my 3rd repair in 6 months, at this rate by the end of 2012 will I have the record :duno

Best regards Stretch :)

I am gettin a new GS from Clarks on Sat. When I asked the sales manager about the `Fuel Gauge` issues i av read about on this forum, he told me that wiv the NEW models, BMW av gone back to the old `Float` type, & are no longer using the strips :clap Surely, he wouldn`t av lied to me, would he? :augie
