Has anyone had a problem with the fuel gauge giving the 'fuel' warning, even though the tank has been filled? The problem started yesterday on the way to the Castle Combe Bikesafe event, two tank fill ups later the warning is still flashing at me. Any advice or pointers to other threads would be great.

scan through this forum, you'll see that the fuel gauges arent the most accurate :blast

just go by the tripmeter .......

Yes, as an old biker we just used to peer into the tank to see what was left. The thing I don't like is the continual flashing warning - basically, it gets on my tits!

Most probably the 'fuel strip' needs re-fitting or replacing. A really stupid idea that smacks of Tesco value branding and all to save a couple of quid for BMW, as if they weren't over-priced and suffering enough quality issues already. Any way and as I understand it, the fuel strip seats at the top & bottom of the tank and as the fuel level drops, the strip dries and records the level as were it is wet. If your fuel strip becomes un-seated top or bottom, the strip floats about and does it's own thing. The fuel strip on my 2008 GSA has been re-fitted/replaced about 9 times already and although the dealer has been really supportive, BMW haven't responded in any other way, other than advising the dealer to replace and re-calibrate which is not doing anything towards resolving the issue. I guess BMW are just sitting tight waiting for the warranty to run out!

happened to me also and new strip obtained under warranty and seems ok to date. dealer said it was a common problem.

If the fault was manifest whilst under warranty BMW will be expected to correct it even after the warranty has expired so just keep going back - even if it takes years. Volvo replaced a car of mine 15 months after the warranty had expired as they eventually admitted that they could not fix it!

I hope they do indeed replace some component for you as the normal course of events is to calibrate everything at least twice before they'll replace anything .... i think they work on the principle that you will get fed up first...

Damn it!!!

I think mine's now packed up as well - tanks reportedly empty, range decreased to zero, flashing yellow triangle etc. etc..... Filled it to the brim and it's made no difference :(

Any idea how long it takes the dealers to replace these things under warranty (bikes only a year old)?

Thanks,

Took my '07 GS to Dealership for a couple of updates, including brake pipe.

Picked it up and rode the 40 miles home w/o problem. Next day got a fuel warning showing empty although tank was brimmed. Eventually fuel stopped registering entirely and got a permanent warning triangle

Dealer Service Coordinator told me to wait a couple of tank fulls to see if it 'recalibrated' itself, otherwise they'd fix it.

Yesterday, after about 2 tanks of gas it started functioning normally again, showing pretty much the right amount of fuel and fuel range and no warning

I have the same problem. A couple of days ago the miles to empty started getting very optimistic. The today I have no bars on the fuel, range showing --- and the orange warning light.

Bizarrely though the computer still shows an mpg reading - how can it do that unless it knows how much fuel has been used...?

It knows how much fuel is being used. Not sure by what means but it will either be via a flow sensor or straight from the injector opening times.

And a few days later, the fuel was again showing empty and the yellow warning triangle glowing; so "its bust" as they say in these parts

Yup, mines just gone. Full tank. Reading empty. Warning light flashing.

I can live with it till the next service but is there any way of temporarily turning off the warning light ?

Suppose there's always a bit of black tape.

And mine!
Just got it repaired under warranty.
