After a ride today I was suprised to get a low fuel light on! given I had over half a tank of fuel.
Toped up anyway and the light is still on also showing no bars on the fuel gauge?
My bike is a 09 model with 6k miles any one no anything about this problem I am on a six month warranty not BMW as I bought from a none dealer used. Don't hold up much chance of getting it fixed from the seller. So BMW will probably want paying...err sounds exspesive already:blast

Fuel strip! :thumb

Common problem, £80 part & a good will gesture on the labour sounds about right!

Thanks Bod I have spoken to the dealer that sold me the bike none BM and they say they probably can't fix it....but want to look at it anway:blagblah

My local BMW dealer say around 200 to fix and the part needs there time to program.:clap so booked it in.
I then recive a voice message from them saying my bike has a campain recal that needs some hours to fix.
I can't get through to them as yet but begining to worry about the wisdom of buying this bike now....:augie

Bang your fist on the desk & politely insist they replace this part!
When mine was done, even the loan bike (F800R) had the same problem?
I seem to recall they have to re-calibrate it after a few hours ..... so don't be taken in with "their time" bullshit.

BMW are even working on a "retro fit" to convert tanks with "the strip" to take a float assembly instead just like new bikes

This is a failed cost cutting measure, designed to replace a costly float assembly with a shit digital strip ....... it lasted 2 years!

Tell them you are fully aware of this dismal failure & fully expect a good will gesture on the labour at least - if they ever want to see you again!

They are reasonable people BUT will try it on if they can. I once had a BMW dealer shrug his shoulders & look a me vacantly when I mentioned final drives? :blast

I have been in Fort William for the weekend with the motor home and the gsa on the trailer on the back. The same problem has happened to mine. As i was coming home yesterday past Dalkeith Bmw I called in to see if i could drop the bike off there to have it repaired and collect it at the weekend. They told me that bmw have had a bad batch and have sent them all back to the manufacturer. And they dont know when they will be getting anymore. They said that the bad batch would not programm up after it was fitted. They said that they were on back order. I was told to fill up and use the trip meter on the clocks. Or try another dealer to see if they had one in stock and have it fitted. I said what if the one i have fitted goes wrong? They said it will have a 2 year warrenty WOW. There must be loads in the same boat as us

Thanks for the info guys, I have to get Lings the seller to pay for it :augie but not going to find that easy....As far as BMW are cocerned the dealer is not intrested in doing this except at full cost:eek The thing is they are going to do a brake pipe change on a campain recal for this bike at the same time and gave me to understand they have to take ther tank off to do it.:augie When i asked if that would reduce my labour costs they said very strongly No:nenau but added they would be sympethetic.:censor:
Bit strong of them what a cheek but I have to wait another mounth for the work and they are BMW arn't they.....:D

Came back from 3 months away (on R+R for 12 days!) to find the fuel strip not working.

A phonecall to Bahnstormer later- they reliably inform me BMW have currently put a bar on further orders of the fuel strip as they're working on a new one. They couldn't tell me when these are going to be ready but they're going to email me when they are.

Roll on end of tour October to get it fixed!

mine packed up last week, 09 gsa , rang dealer with problem, and told them i believe bmw know of the problem to which they agreed and will be fixed foc with an updated strip

Fuel Gauge

8 separate visits to Bahnstormers, 3 replacement strips, mileage readings as useful as a chocolate teapot, and finally on the day of it's first MOT the fuel gauge packs up completely! Nice 3rd Birthday present having it's amber warning light permanently flashing like a Christmas Tree! Well it's been sitting in Bahnstormers for 2 weeks now while BMW work out what to do ... supposedly manufacturing new 'special strips' to solve it? I think it's time for BMW to replace the system that has NEVER worked with the latest float based fuel gauge system .... even if they need to replace the loom too!
Grrr!

Don't talk to me about fuel strips.

got it replaced under warranty 6 months ago (2008 GSA), It packed up again, (only been installed 6 months) so I phoned up and said that obviously BMW would replace it under warranty again as I had only just had it done.
Well because I had it done under warranty and hadn't paid the full price it wasn't covered by warranty.

If I would like to got back and pay the full price then they would give me a warranty.

But as its a BMW known fault it will fail again, so I suppose i'll have to pay again and again and again (for something they know doesn't work, wish I could do that in my job)

I love my bike but the fuel gauge is shite anyway. So I'm going to do the fixed resistor trick, ride on the trip gauge which is is more actuate anyway and then when the poor old thing conks out buy a Ural instead.
