Just got off the phone to BMW service at Battersea and told theres now a recall for fuel gauge on R1200GS They seem pretty clued up there, and would know what they are talking about,BUT has anyone else heard the same. I was deeeeeeeeeply unimpressed to be relying on the fuel gauge and for it to die completely (the fuel gauge, followed very nearly by me and my g/f!!!, already posted gory details on here somewhere!)
Unusually for me gonna keep it short, but would love to know if anyone else has heard the same...

Seems odd to do a recall, as its been like this through the model's life AFAIK. Its not a safety problem, more of an inconvenience. Guess it'd be nice to have a gauge that works, but TBH I've never had a bike with a gauge before and never had a problem using the trip counter as a rough guess to miles left. Doing it this way gives me a better idea of economy too without the cost of one of those computer whatsits.

I've not personally heard of any as yet.....but maybe this is a sign of BMW moving in the right direction to rectify their recent problems...that they've ultimately caused themselves! :nenau

...let's hope so :augie

As ts2 says......my fuel guage (2006 GSA) is not the most accurate of things, but you get used to it. I wouldn't say it was worthy of a recall IMHO.

But there have been frequent complaints from owners on here recently, normally on newer models, and I was never sure if the newer ones are considerably worse, or that they are the same, but people's intollerance of them is less than mine :nenau

I guess a fuel guage should work....but it is only a guide, and never totally accurate.....I think you just get used to it's ways, and learn to know what it's really telling you....just like every one i've ever owned...on bike, and car.

Just my 2p's worth :augie

sure you don't mean the fuel pump?

so why query it then?

as has been mentioned by others i have not heard of this from any source and cant understand why they would do a costly recall on an issue that is an inconvenience at worst. Unless they also know something about the fuel guage that we dont :nenau

..

how did the fuel guage dying nearly cause the death of you and your girlfriend :nenau

edit: dont reply - I've just remembered your running out of fuel thread :thumb2

No as gauge and pump do tend to not sound similar......:augie:comfort: :toungincheek

The words sound and look different - however the level of technical knowledge possessed by the average biker is such that I think the two could easily be confused :D

I thought recalls were generally for items that compromise safety when they fail. It seems to me that the FPC would be much higher up the list and I have had written confirmation from VOSA that BMW are working on the FPC. Again, VOSA dont get involved unless there are safety issues. FWIW:augie
