I am currently having issues with the fuel gauge on my new R1200GSA.

I have from 20 mile range put in 20 litres of fuel, and the display shows 2 bars and 80 mile range after 5 mins of riding

Then it will stay at this range for ages, and then suddenly drop back to reserve.

My brother has the same bike, and his is doing similar things??

I have never read any of these issues on the forum:confused:

Its a Feature - fuel gauge is almost a complete waste of space. Fill it up, zero the clock and refill when your ar*e is sore, you need a fag or coffee or you're at the last fuel stop for miles. :thumb2

I thought that this would be the answer:angel

Not bad for a 12k bike, I suppose this is what you get for buying Japanese...er German

Hi
I dont agree.I have a 07 with the "computer".The fuel gauge is always on spot after the last software upgrade.Check with your dealar that your bike is up to date.

Mine is frighteningly accurate on the final countdown, down to a range of 5 miles and squeeze in 33 litres!

My fuel gauge on my new gsa, read invertly after a couple of months of use. When it was full it showed empty and visa-vera. Got it re-calibrated under warrently. Now all OK.

:) My fuekl gauge has always worked as expected...full when full goes down as I use it and empty when empty...the range thing seems acceptable as well.....
0 miles and 33.5 L in...;)

A FRIEND AN I HAVE BOTH HAD ISSUES WITH OUR FUEL READINGS AT THE LOWER END. BMW HAVE STATED IT IS TO DO WITH THE SHAPE OF THE TANK. THAT IS THE ONLY THING I CAN MOAN ABOUT THE BIKE THOUGH, EVERYTHING ELSE IS FAB.!!

I have a GS (not GSA) and I am still coming to terms with the fact that I am not riding my previous RT with its humongous range.

On the RT I had the gauge down to Zero bars and the computer telling me that I had 1 mile left. I am not a brave fella its just that it was a Sunday in the middle of France somewhere and I had not done the obvious thing of filling up when my wife stopped to fill up some 60 miles earlier.

I have to say that as the 'miles left' dropped there was a corrrespnding reduction in my speed and and increase in sphincter tightening.

So in summary - I didnt run out and so the comuter did its job of getting me fill up before I ran out. Was it accurate? Did I have 3-4 litres left? I dunno.

In a similar vein, my Mrs made the fatal error of relying on the computer on her R earlier this year. I was about a mile ahead and over the radio was informed that she had lost power and pulled over. On further questioning (via radio) it transpired that the comp was showing 45 miles and then jumped to 30 - 25 - 17 - ....... niente. So being a gent, I re-mounted my steed, headed 8 miles further North up the Autroroute. Found petrol. Returned down the other side of the carriageway (wilst attempting to re-establish radio contact) had to ride past her position to get to an exit to get on her side all just to save the day.

Who says that chivalry is dead? :)

So lesson learned and repeated many times in many locations - know the range of your bike and use the gauge and comp as guides only.

I posted a similar query about my newly acquired '04 GS. The gauge shows full when full, stays that way for about 90 miles then drops to half full, then progressively drops. Low fuel comes on at 50 miles and mile count down is pretty accurate.
Being used to older 'bikes and no gauges I always rely more on the trip mileage anyway but having the countdown is a bonus to me!

That's what the early 1200 GSs did - full to 1/2 was one step.

I find the gauge on my '04 1200GS to be quite accurate.
Initially, it will drop to half after 100 miles or so.
Then gradually go down the gauge until it starts to count down at about 40 miles to empty.
I have had it to zero and 36 miles beyond zero before filling it with 21 litres.
Now, I don't worry. I regularly get 200 miles from a tank.

You should get one of the proper GSA gauges. Mine ticks down sensibly for 200ish miles then drops to 1 bar for 50 miles and then starts climbing. By 300 miles it is over half full. I never have to fill it up. :D

Hi, I'm having similar problems with my new GSA . I reported it to the dealer when I was booking it in for it's first service, they told me it was something to do with the "Film Sensor" that measures the fuel level. They're going to sort it when it's in for the service , here's hoping it sorts this annoying problem out. Apart from that I love the bike. Hope this helps.

This is really indefensible, from BMW's standpoint. Any cheap piece of software can calculate the amount of liquid in an irregularly shaped tank. The tank does not change it's shape, so the volume should be calculate-able down to the last drop, regardless of where the level is, resulting in a fuel gauge which shows a linear drop from full to zero, as we would want it to.

An opportunity for a budding entrepreneur? I'll take 5% of the proceeds.
