On my last few fill ups the very top bar on the fuel gauge has not illuminated.

Bike is a January 02 single spark with 60k miles.

Any ideas please.

Mike

Mines done that too - for @6 years, bikes on 90k, never really worried about it as it's full.

So apart from that, I can't help. sorry :D

Mine too.

As far as I can tell it doesn't affect the 'accuracy' of the lower bars where it really matters.

Same here. 2002 GSA. It very occasionally shows the top bar but usually not.

For a few years mine wouldn't show the top bar until I'd burned a couple of litres after a fill. I think it's got better by itself, but I don't take much notice when I know it's full...

Seems to be a common occurrence.

Not worried about it, just curious.

Many thanks for your help

Mike

Mine just started doing it about the same time as yours. If I brim it, it'll show the top bar but then it'll disappear. As it only effects the top bar and everythign else seems to work, it's a feature and I was planning to check out the range of movement of the float switch when I next change the fuel filter.

My 2003 single spark with a mere 33k has done the same for the past FOUR YEARS !!! Just ignore the bugger !!! :D

I had the same problem. After I removed the fuel filter/fuel gauge plate from the tank, I used a small brass brush (brass being softer than the steel wire fuel gauge windings) and a pencil eraser, along with solvent, to clean the corrosion/tarnish from the windings. Clean gently and only in the direction of the windings, not perpindicular to them. Mine cleaned up nicely and the fuel gauge has performed normally since. Be careful with the small nuts holding the fuel filter/fuel gauge plate onto the tank - you don't want to break off any of the studs. Here's a link to a (perhaps) useful thread on advrider.

Many thanks for that (although I don't understand half of it!)

Mike

GSBruce, thanks for posting that link to ADV as mine is doing exactly what the thread details described,a buggered up or slightly worn pivot point on the float arm. It works once the tank is down a third, will pull tank off in the spring and change the fuel filter and attempt a repair to the pivot point at the same time.

Did mine some time ago following the adv rider thread as was very random for quite a while, could only really rely on the fuel light. All ok since doing it except the top bar only comes on briefly after top up as per the OP.

For anyone else who has the disappearing top bar problem, this may be your problem/ answer:

It was for me. Basically to solve it involved a couple of minutes cleaning the contacts of the 4 pin plug and a dab of ACF50 on each one and guess what, it all worked again!

I'm not saying that's the answer to everyone's dramas but is a good place to start.

mine lights up on centre stand when chocca, as soon as it,s off it drops a bar, never done anything wrong with lower bars but my fuel warning light only worked once since iv,e had it, don,t know if it,s anything to do with the bars being out of sinc
