Anyone suffering with fuel gauge inaccurate reading?
Fill the tank, and after 150 miles, still shows full!!
First service, and BMW informs me that this has become a common occurance.
After 1000miles still no change.
Is this likely to be a recall, or am I on my own with this problem?

The guage will show full and then drop in one hit to half full. It should then gradually decrease. This is as designed (surprising though it may seem) and earlier GSs were similar though not quite so pronounced.

Mind you 150 miles is a lot. Mine normally drops between 110 and 125 miles depending on how I've been riding. What sort of range are you getting overall?

I have found it pretty accurate and consistent. So, if yours follows, the same pattern: "They are meant to do that Sir".

Mine stays on full for about 120 then drops like a stone! Running it to the last on the indicated reserve still leaves 2 litres. Its supposed to better than the 1150 but I think its the same but I'd prefer it if they kept the 22L tank.

Running it to the last on the indicated reserve

Is that the last bar or zero miles left on the mileage indicator?

Curious because I haven't had the courage to go below 12 miles left so far.

Incidentally this was at 250 miles which is far further than I ever got out of the 1150 tank - 250 miles is equivalent to about an indicated 270 on an 1150. So I' don't really miss the extra 2l.

I believe a fairly common problem with the first batch of R12GS'es shipped to the USA was that the fuel float arm was bent improperly during installation. Resulting in the float contacting the inside of the gastank and being prevented from moving as the fuel level changed.

It should be fairly easy to peer into the gascap opening with a flashlight and a small mirror and see if this is the case...

Thank you for my replys relating to the fuel gauge inaccurate reading. At the NEC bike show Birmingham, I spoke with a BMW technician who informed me that he had recieved many complaints relating to the same. The problem apparantly relates to the shape of the tank and the sensor, as mentioned by HMarc (thankyou).I suppose as long as the gauge reflects the riders driving habits, I will have to get used to looking at a full gauge until the last 50 miles or so!! Very strange, and not something I would expect from BMW.
See you out there,JB
