I know loads of people don't rate the OE onboard computer and it didn't really bother me until I ran out of fuel on the M11 yesterday The screen showed I had a range 134 miles left and there was no low fuel warning. I was in the outside lane at the time as well

Came to rest still no warning light, but couldn't think what else it could be and couldn't see any fuel in the tank. BMW assist turned up 45 minutes later with a gallon of fuel at my suggestion. We put that in first and it fired first time.

The bloke followed me up to Stanstead services just to be sure and to charge me £5 for the fuel. Fuel guage now showing 168 miles range filled up at the services for the trip back to London. Range showed 207 miles.

By the time I arrived home 30 miles later it was showing 217 miles It was working fine 10 days ago when I last filled it. I thought it was not reading quite right, but didn't expect the fuel warning light to fail as well.

So it is booked into Park Lane on Friday to see if they can sort it out. It will be a I while before I depend on the warning light again. I think I'd be better off without it! Came to work by Bicycle today. At least i know how much fuel I have

Hope nobody else has to suffer this one.

My daughter Hannah made it all the way to Cambridge on her 125 Van Van yesterday. I had 4 phone calls because she got lost but she made it in the end. Worried me half to death. She is coming home today I hope.

Sounds a bit controversial, perhaps, but in my humble and honest opinion, it's possible you may have a faulty fuel level sensor. :grndevil

I always zero my trip when I fill up and work off that mainly

This was very common on the earlier R1200GS the arm was required to have an extra kink put in.

It stuck against the side of the tank and lots of people ran out

I think there was even a recall for this one!

At least it wasnt the inadequate battery, fuel pump or final drive!!!! Sorry, sarcastic I know!!! 04 1200GS.

Same problem

I have a 06 1200 GSA and it has been back to the dealer twice for new software and new tank sender unit. The onboard "computer" is a useless piece of tat. I just allow 6litres / 100km and zero the odometer at every fill up.

And we call it progress !!!

I disagree. I find the information useful - even the temperature gauge. My fuel gauge has also been fine. Best to reset the MPG displays now and again.

I'm glad that yours works satisfactorily, but looking at the forums there are enough out there that dont. I can live without it, but it is disappointing to pay above average prices for average / below average technology. If its fitted it should at least work and be fit for purpose, clearly there are enough that fall below this minimum standard.Possibly the makings of a good six sigma project for someone in BMW!!

You don't say if your trip to the dealers for new strip and software upgrade has fixed your problem.

As to the cost of the bike......... well my Pan Europeans cost more and the fuel gauge on the ST1300 was none too clever.

New tank sender and software update has not fixed the problem, the operation of the fuel guage and range function can at best be described as unstable. I take your point of resetting the various functions, avg speed, fuel consumption etc, but tried all those before replacing the tank sender unit.
The warning light appears to be reliable ( I hope !!!!) and illuminates when about 30 litres of fuel have been consumed. That said, this week the warning light came on with a range of 383km showing on the range display

As I say , I can live without it, but as the comparison has been made, I never had this problem with my VFR800. Perfectly acceptable calibration and performance from the instrumentation supplied by Mr Honda.


So long as I can keep ahead of the alzheimers all I have to do is remember to keep putting fuel in :

Never run out of fuel, and have frequently finished a run with the 'Range' indicator showing a higher mileage than at the start. Obviously it's all down to riding style and conditions etc. but at the end of the day every bike will differ from every other... Right? On a similar note; filled up just outside Genoa last week, reset the trip and had a hyperthetical 515 miles to the tank! Was mainly downhill mountain roads, but anyone better that?
