Hi all
Just picked up my 1200 yesterday at long last and so far very pleased, couple of questions though, how acurate is the count down part of the fuel gauge? can it be relied upon to give a fair miles left in tank.As previously posted it takes a good 100 or so before 1st block drops to 1/2 tank. Also whats the overal feeling on whats the best hugger to get to stop the muck flying every where?
Thanks guys
Lyndon

I've only been brave enough to take it down to 12. I think the only thing that would really confuse it is if you suddenly change your riding style. eg if you've been drifting along and then decide to give it a good thrash - the remaining miles could vanish quite swiftly.

BTW, yesterday I still had 25 miles left to go and put 19.3l in tank (absolutely full) which implies it can hold about 21.5l when to the brim.

Hi

I agree that the tank is bigger than advertised. I drilled the neck hole and was amazed at the "extra" you can get in. The fuel warning light started to come on about 25 mi later. This is about 2 litre of fuel.

Does anyone else agree?

Miles countdown

Is it right to assume that there is no fuel consumption calculation in the miles to pushing countdown? If so it will have to use an "average" consumption, which may or may not relect the current fuel usage.

From my experience, I think there is some fuel consumption calculation though this seems to be on an averaging basis - just not sure what period it is averaging over. If you open it up you can certainly get the miles remaining to go down faster than the actual miles covered so it is sensitive to some extent to current fuel usage.

Which is a long way of saying that I don't know. :)

I removed the rubber thingy from the tank and now add a good bit more fuel. Range has gone up by some 20-30 miles.

mine was reading 6km to empty (country run, so was sweating).
Took 19 litres to top up, so looks like it is biased on the safe side.

Got nearly 9k on the clock now and while riding in Spain with my bruv on his GSa with big tank took my fuel remaining down to 5 miles. Really thought it was going to run out for ages but didn't. Filled up with 21 and a bit litres ( I too have drilled holes in the filler neck so get another litre and a bit in to full ). Odometer reading when eventually stopped for fuel 263miles. Much of this riding was at a constant 120kph

Bah I'm sure there's something wrong my my GS now, I have never seen over 200 miles on the clock when filling up. I can usually squeeze 19 litres or so in the tank if it's empty, but haven't drilled the doodah yet.

A question for you guys with drilled filler necks and removed rubber thingie...

Does the gas tank cap still do the job, or does it allow fuel to leak out if the bike is at an angle?

I ask because if I happen to have a simple little tipover, I would hate for gas to come leaking out the top of the tank. Have any of you tried gently laying the bike over on the crash bars to see if the cap still works?

Good point Emoto but I had a good look at the filler neck and seal before attempting the drilling, and, the filler cap seals around the top of the filler neck so shouldn't compromise the the filler seal.
However, I have never tried laying the bike down but have ridden over some severe bumpy roads and still no leakage.
