Fuel Guage Sender

I have recently had to remove the sender due to it reading low and the problem is the fuel leaves a deposit on the sender wiper switch contacts which are exposed in the fuel.

For those who may experience this problem here is a picture of where to clean the wiper contacts, i used a pencil eraser and then cleaned with switch cleaner.

Cheers Jim

My fuel gauge has been acting strange for the last few weeks - never registering full when it is and showing erratic readings as the fuel is used.
Thats my project this weekend. :beerjug:

Permanent full tank

Mine's just started the same thing, but it's showing permanently full but the low fuel light still comes on when it get's low. Has anyone got any idea of what this is as I wouls have imagined that the low fuel light and the gauge were working off the same censor?

I (okay, we) replaced the fuel filter whilst doing the 24k service last Saturday and had a bit of a job getting the gubbins out of the tank and then replacing it. When replacing it we were very careful not to damage the float arm but even so my fuel gauge has been playing around a bit this week. It used to be quite linear but now it loses only one or two blocks after 110 miles before dropping quite quickly towards the 180 mile mark, where I usually fill up. It took the usual amount of fuel so I wasn't too concerned, just reminds me of an old Kawasaki GPz550 I used to own :)

One thing that often gives erratic fuel readings is if the square connector under the RHS sidecover is not contact clean and fully seated when replaced after tank removal. Always check this connector before presuming it is internal!

Low level light is separate to level sender.
I had a prob after nice man changed filter for me and left it so the float arm jammed under the bloody jubilee clip on the filter tail hose.
Now I fit my own filters....
Watch the orientation of the jub clip worm part.

Hmmm...

have had LONG issue wrt fuel level and the sender. Bike started showing erratic fuel levels over a year ago. Has had 3 sender relays and a new fuel tank. And it STILL isn't correct!!! And the dealer can't think why it isn't correct and what is causing it. Darned if I know either.

Mine's bin doing it for a year now,not sure I can be bothered to faff about with it.Use the trip like i've done with all my other bikes.

Marcus.

Marcus,

I too have grown to 'live' with it and use the tacho as a rough guide as my fuel consumption. But I take great umbrage when I spend nearly nine and a hlaf grand on a BMW for it to feck-up over something trivial as the fuel guage. I was told by the dealer, after they had spoken to the head honchos in Brakcnell that they can behave like this from any given moment, even when new!!! I'd be interested to learn of other riders with the same problem.
