HI

Gotta 2007 r1200 gsa, if you fill the tank up you go about 140 miles ish and it will drop to half a tank or bit below. bmw said this is normal? none of my other bikes have been like this, are they just fobbing me off?

Do a search on fuel gauges. Be prepared for a long read.:augie

In short, they have a strip inside the fuel tank which is the most useless thing known to man. Mine's been back under warranty 3 times for it now. It's not too bad if you fill it up and run it to empty, but if you put half a tank in it's useless. It's a comon problem.

Yep same bike an year....around 167miles mine drops to half way.
I just use the trip -o-meter for fuel range...hasn't done me wrong yet!

Early bikes did not have a strip inside the tank which is very unreliable. On my 2005 the fuel gauge looks like a lot of small blocks but the top 50% is in fact only one graphic so the bike will show full until half full and then half the gauge disappears. Hope this makes sense. There is nothing wrong with the gauge, that is just the way it was designed.

My 2009 bike has the strip and all the small blocks on the gauge are separate. In theory this means a better feed back of the fuel level. In practice the strip does not work properly so you get all sorts of strange read outs. My strip has been replaced and reset 4 times now and the damn gauge can still go from 1/4 tank to 3/4 without putting fuel in and I can get a low fuel warning with over half a tank showing. This is not an unusual problem and my dealer has agreed to keep trying but accepts the strips do not work properly.

I think a 2007 bike has the old system. Much more reliable.

I know that I get about 300 miles out of a tank on my GSA.

I also like to fill up early as I live in the country, and it not always close to the nearest fuel station.

I biked for years without a fuel gauge at all, so it doesn't worry me too much.

They are useless, I'm on my 3rd in 6 months, all warranty though.
Otherwise ride using the trip....simples!:comfort

I too have the same bike, and the same 'fault'...I just use the trip meter, and normally get 10-12 miles per litre, and this very 'scientific' approach has served me well :D

what you getting out of a tank?

I "Always" get at least 400 miles to a tank, and thats with a Laminair Lip and Jesse bags on.
I drilled the filler neck to vent the air and get the fuel within 2" or so, from the top.
Average fuel fills are 8.7 to 9.3 gallons @ 400 miles. Fuel consumption is anywhere between 41mpg's to 44mpg's. I've gotten as high as 47mpg's when I ride with the *chrome n go* Pirate crowd.
I like to shift around 4000 or so RPM's.
I don't *beat on* the bike but then I don't *baby it* either.
RPM's at highway speeds 4-4300 @ 70-75 miles per hour.
