Tell them again, they all go wrong, but no reason not to get it done on warranty. BMW fixed my 57 reg, and its now perfectly linear. The problem is, when they start to go wrong, they never get better, but do get progressvely worse, and was the cause for several break-downs, and walk-o-shame with newly purchased petrol can.

Mine did very similar things, so I lodged a complaint and the level thingy in the tank was changed and it's been fine ever since (30000km) but I still use the trip as security :blast

accurate

mine seems to be accurate,254 miles & showing 7miles left on the countdown display-took 20.09l to brim it

Just bought my GS. What sort of range will I get before I should be panicking? I have absolutely no idea. My Ducati ST3 was useless in this dept. It had a distance to empty feature that as soon as the low fuel light went on, went blank. I then was able to ride about 60 miles with ease before filling up. Hoping the GS is a little bit more sophiticated but fear, having read the thread, that this is not going to be the case. Fingers crossed.:rolllaugh

Fill it.Take a spare can full.Ride it.When it coughs put the spare juice in .note the mileage.Simple.Works for me,Said this all before but get shouted at.I have no need to start staring at the horizon for petrol station untill the 225 mark, regular.

Pain in the...

Mine always shows full... Like many, i'm relying on the trip meter, but with an Adv (33 litre capacity), it's a bit of a b@lls filling it all the time, so I have to remember if I put £20 or £25 in. :(

As the tank is plastic, wouldn't it be an idea if they made the tanks clear (or at least a portion of it), like enduro bikes?

I read a post recently about people who removed and cleaned a plug to the tank sensor. Can anyone tell (or better still, show a picture) me how to do this?

Patrick.

I have managed 200 miles - there were still 3 miles to go according to the fuel gauge.

Last fill 185 miles on the trip, computer said 7 miles to go and I could only put 16.7 lts in the tank! I have the OBC so, does the fuel range include or exclude the reserve? The above implies it doesn't include the reserve - 16.7 + 4 = 20.7 lts which is what others have reported as the true tank volume.

OBC fuel range usually starts from a full tank reporting ~200 mile range, quickly moves to ~250 miles for the first 120 miles of riding and then drops off to ~190/200 miles between 120 and 150 miles riding. It then turns out this should be higher (remain at ~250) if I have 4 lts of fuel left! Crap computer.

Getting my 600 mile service next week and will see if they can sort it out.

mpg is almost spot on though - consistent 50/51 mpg so far both on OBC and calculated.

Mines an 09 and it showed half full when the thing coughed and died on a ring road! Took it to the dealers, they replaced the sensor-ma-bob & and the whole headlight (condensation). If it ain't broke don't fix it...If it is broke, sort it out! A fuel gauge is on the bike for a reason, why shouldn't it work? :thumb2

Mines an 08, with 2 fuel thingies replaced before I bought it 4 months ago. Had another one put in 2 weeks ago, all under warranty, and "touch wood" all seems to be fine so far.
Completely agree about a clear strip in the plastic tank in order to check the level, as it has worked fine on every other bike I have ever owned, or just open the cap and have a look.

I bought a new 09 GSA a few months ago and had the same problem right off the showroom floor.BMW Motorad at first was less than helpful at first explaining that the fuel gauge was just a indicator and shouldn't be relied on and it isnt that big of deal. Until I asked them where they parked there car at so I could disconnect there fuel gauge and see how they like it.My local dealer was great through the whole ordeal how ever I did want it fixed.I don't care for the idea of carrying 70 lbs of gas every time I want to go some where. And as for fuel mileage it drops about 20 mpg when off road so how much fuel is really in the bike at any given time. The good news is they were able to fix it. The first time the dealer tried to short cut the the service bulletin and the fix didn't work. They have to follow the bulletin to the letter to get it to work. Im happy to say that 7500 miles latter it still works perfect. I heard through other websites that a bikes have been struck from behind after running out of fuel on major highways.
