Fuel leak number thee

02 1150GSA noticed it leaking fuel from the 2 lines on the right hand side of the engine back in the end of October. It was returned with no issues reported after the clip being removed and renewed. (No pictures unfortunately)


Roll on 4th December, fired the bike up to go for a ride, once again leaking fuel. This was a bad one and was spraying to the suspension and dripping down!

Bike was taken in again and the same fix was carried out. Rode home no issues.

Parked the bike up and have just pulled it out again to start it up and lo and behold. Fuel leak. Same hose connection. Albeit it not as bad as previously it’s still bloody leaking.

Am I missing something here? Are these known leak points? I’m pulling what little hair I have left out if I’m honest, I don’t suppose there’s some upgraded fix from Motorworks? Only use supreme fuel

Any help appreciated 👍🏻

I always use a Fuel Line type Jubilee that will not wrinkle the hose when it tightens up!!

there is a saddle above the screw bit that stops that

In the good old days of 1100s many of the clips were the reusable screw type rather than the crappy pinch ones... Jubilee etc do proper fuel pipe screw connectors... Just use those... V simple.
Jubilee clips can leak under the high pressures in FI systems as they don't apply even pressure around the hose. Oetiker clips are what you want.
 
The rigid pipe has a bulge in it.
In the second photo it looks to me that the flexable pipe has not been pushed for enough on to the rigid pipe and that the hose clamp is gripping the pipe before the bulge.
Remove the Oteker clamp, push the flexible hose on further, install a screw type 'jubilee' hose clamp after the bulge.

If you take your moto in for somebody to do the repair, then the above maynot be clear, would like to do a drawing but its 02:04 where i am so not happening right now.

If you take you moto in for somebody to do the repair, then they are not doing a repair, they are doing it wrong. However, who ever is doing the repair should understand the above.

And if they are doing the repair like that, find another place to get your work done.

The above is based on what i am seeing and what it looks like to me.

Best solution is to get some metal after market quick disconnects fitted. Am sure there is a threas here on ukgser about that, but get some body proper to fit them if you cant.

I think it’s just the angle - theres definitely no bulge in either pipe

I did have the quick disconnects fitted - but it seems as though they’ve been fitted under the tank.

Not sure this is correct looking through the threads though!

You might have missed my point that jubilee etc do proper fuel pipe clips. I know this because we sell them... They are "all around" clips and early mid 1100s were fitted with that style of clip on the pipes shown above before they moved to quick release clips... Screw fuel pipe clips were also used in tank on Ks and Rs before they moved to the above clips...

Reusable on my 1150 as standard, so not just on the 1100’s.

There are bulges on the ‘plastic’ pipes, the ‘rubber’ hoses need to be far enough on so the clips are placed before the bulge, as per the previous comment.

I’ve removed my petrol tank on at least 10+ times, only had a slight leak once and the cause was not pushing the ‘rubber’ pipes far enough on before tightening the hose clamps.
 
well, if there is no bulge visible, and the hose is pushed on far enough to the rigid pipe, AND the clamp is behind the rigid pipe, my next action would be to replace the flexable hose.
Possibly old and perished or has a crack.

As you have seen, there are other threads about the Quick Disconnects.
This is my set up.
As you can see, on the rigid pipe one connector is Male, the other rigid pipe has the female end. This ensures that the connectors can only go on the correct way and the flow cannot be opposite / wrong.
I got my connectors from EME / EuroMotoElec in Denver, USA. After checking around, best option.

You're right, I did miss the point there. I never knew Jubilee did anything other than the standard Jubilee clip.
 
So I’ve been in touch with my mechanic and we’ve come up with the following :

Apparently the black plastic fuel supply line that goes into the rubber hose can get brittle over time and crack and the crack opens and closes with changes in temperature giving an intermittent leak.

This is precisely what I’ve seen as the bike is kept in an AC heated / cooled garage.

I’ve picked up a new set of fuel distribution lines that appear to have the quick disconnects too.

He’s fitting FoC in the new year. Will report back in due course. And yes the clips will be changed out!! :beerjug: :D

Have been many occurances reported of those failing and leaking fuel over the years.
Metel onesnfrom EME in Denver are an excellent alternative.

I picked up a used engine a few years ago (an early twin spark 1150 from an RT ) and it included all of the fuel distribution pipes and all of the rigid plastic ones had gone hard and brittle and took very little pressure to shatter them (just removing the old ear clips was enough) . I have seen the same thing on rigid plastic fuel and air pipes on VW's of the same era .

It is one of the things I will monitor and probably eventually change on my 1999 R1150GS
 
The rigid black plastic lines from the pressure distributor have a slight bulge when you look at it..
