Fuel Problem ?-Lurching Down the Road!!

I hope my fellow GSers will come to my aid........Heres the story.....
About a week ago i was riding my 1100GS to work (long way 'round) when my fuel light came on. I stopped at the first petrol station and when i opened the fuel cap a good glug of water went straight in the tank. This happens quite alot on my Triumph because the drain gets blocked, so i made a mental note to check the drain, filled up an off I went. About 5 miles down the rode I noticed a high pitched noise coming from the fuel pump and the bike started to misfire on part-throttle and had developed an intermittent flat-spot on acceleration. Looking on the forum, this all pointed to the filter, so I replaced the filter (put it outside the tank) replaced the strainer and all the pipes and clips in the tank. The fuel pump is now quiet, but I am still lurching down the street, misfiring and hesitating. Coincidently, the bike seems OK for the first couple of miles........I was thinking there may be some water still in the tank? Any opinions would be gratefully received
Kind Regards and a Merry Christmas to you all
Roger

Yes, the tank has been off and the pump/filter/sender removed and replaced. Do you think the fuel pump noise/water and the misfire are just coincidental? I thought the coils were reliable on 1100s? It just seems strange that the misfire started when the pump started making a noise? I have post-mortemed the old fuel filter and it was well and truly shagged.

Common problem after taking the tank off is to disturb the throttle balance cable and the it runs like sh1t. But if yours is doing it only after a few miles, I'd guess this isn't the problem.

My neighbour suggested dirty injectors.....I have just replaced the plugs (which looked like they had been in some time...) and added a good glug of redex injector cleaner to the tank. Gave it a slosh around and took her out for 20 minutes. Seems to have cured it......lots more power and no lurching at low rpm:D:D:D I will monitor over the next week and see how it progresses, but she got right up to full temp with no lurching, I'll take her for a proper run on Boxing Day.
Thanks for your help
Regards

this brings to mind an answer from steptoe to a previous post.. if there's water in the tank it gets sloshed about from one lobe to the other and that causes these symptoms - personally I think you were on the right track with your original post. I would investigate that before messing about with injectors and the like.

edit:
Ah... serves me right for dawdling (and not looking at updated posts) hopefully you have cured it - but still be aware of the water in the tank.

I think you are right, I think was initially due to water. I don'y know whether the Redex has allowed the water to emulsify? It certainly seems to have masked the symptoms. It is interesting that as per Steptoes post, the morning all this started was the first morning after i'd left the bike on the sidestand overnight!! How can you get all the water out.........even turning the tank upside down i had a few pints left inside?

IIRC there's a product for bikes that are susceptible to carb icing, and it messes with the water so it doesn't cause carb icing, ot in your case coughing and spluttering. I'd guess best way is to empty the tank as much as possible, fill with good fuel and this water converter.

go to a motorfactors and buy some dry fuel, made by wynns, you can also put in pure alcohol, it allows the water to mix with the fuel, and be burnt off :augie

Lets not get silly about this PURE acohol in a bike!!, this MUST be reserved for the owner whatever next, sacralige!.
Dave ( I hate christmas soon be over now!!!!!) GS

Alcohol....of course....I will dose tank accordingly, It seems to be running fine now, but I would like to make sure any residual moisture is taken care of before it causes a problem again.

Thanks for the lights Dave, arrived yesterday, very nicely made and very well packaged, a bargain. I will get them bolted on tomorrow!!

Roger

That wynns product looks to be a good idea from the write-up it seems to act both on water and to do exactly what redex is reputed to do.

They recommend its use twice a year.

Dude. Just get the water out. of course is doing a buking bronco. don't get me started. maddocks. hahaha.

I had a lovely day.
Wishing everyone bar a few a very happy new year.

I'm still very annonyed about water in my tank. Maybe it was the ,esser of two evils to not tell me.

Merry christmas:comfort

Ps.

I'm taking off my swingarm on the 27th. make sweet **** all difference to the tuning. YOu lot don't care though because you just bring yours to the dealers for a wash don't ya:D haha.

very drunk here. Xmas night. Time to retire to bed. All typed is true.

Gobshites tune a sick tank.

Sobered up yet ..........

yep it was my bike that had the problems last year and steptoe sorted it

water in tank and dry fuel cured it

A similar water displacing product is called ProFST by Silkolene. I used to need it in my old Yamaha in winter to prevent carb icing. (Invented by Silkolene for the Kawasaki racing team).

Obviously your best solution is to unblock the fuel tank filler drain hole. It doesn't take much water in the fuel to cause rough running etc.

I treated 2 gallons of fuel to a dose of redex injector cleaner and 500ml of Methylated Spirit. It did smell a bit strange and more steam came out of the exhaust which i suppose is the water, but she's back to normal now, and running really well. I think i'll do this a couple of times a year in future, as a preventative measure to get rid of any water in the tank.
