Right has anyone modified there fuel pump control cover and if so what way did they do it. Obviously the vents are there to stop the controller overheating and let air circulate so just taping it up is not an option.

If yours has the black casing then chances are it'll be fine. The failure rate has dropped right down (but not stopped completely with the new 'black' type). If your FPC is silver coloured then suggest you replace it with a new one and carry the old one as a spare.
Either way I would suggest you get a spare and stash it on the bike. Then forget about it.
The very fact that you have a spare means it won't fail (Sod's law part 2). :D

you dontneedto modify the lid,the top of the contoller housing can be full of water and it will still be ok,ok?

Some neoprene tube with some twisted cotton string threaded through will work like a wick. Zip tie the tube so it loops down into the controller pot and down the side of the tank. It costs 2p and will wick any water away from the controller.

Have to disagree with you there I'll say that it "may" be okay but, NOT in all cases and it is a simple job to adapt the cover

Mine is an 05 controller in an 04 bike with the cover modified with a bit of rubber floormat cut up and secured in such a way that water can't get in

Not even when I am riding along in a monsoon :aidan that seems to be prevalent in our weather system :eek

Donny1972 I'll try and get a pic later if you wish?

we agree to differ:D but every one of the 5 gs/gsa i have had have always had water swishing around there and i have never had a prob,i reckon as long as the seal on the connector is ok all will be well.but then there is no logic sometimes to the probs on these bikes:thumb

Later 1200s don't have a plastic cover & the fuel pump is tilted more so the puddle of water misses the FPC.
The silver controllers are a ticking time bomb. Saying that mine didn't let go & my black spare has been riding pillion for 4 years now.
I think a spare FPC is about £80 now.:nenau

I blocked all the vents in mine when it was about a week old.

50,000 miles later and it's still on the original silver controller.
Bike used every day, rain or shine.

That controller has never got so much as warm let alone over heated.
I've been carrying a spare with me for 50,000 miles :blast

YMMV

Ahh, but Sods law part three says "If you don't take the spare with you, it will fail" :rob

Angus the casing is black plastic and the contoller is silver

the latest FPC units are black. they have proven to be more reliable than the old silver units.

the GSA's FPC is still in a more or less horizontal position, with a cover.

that is my experience with 2 bikes. the water ingress to the connection below the FPC was attributed to a faulty, or badly fitted o ring around the FPC unit and was addressed in an update applied when the affected bikes were at the dealers (or should have been).

Thats great thanks duckspeed, you would have thought the engineers at bmw would have worked out that the controller does not get that hot.:firemth

Anyone got any pictures of the mods ?
