Ok, I'm sure this has been done to death but I've got questions. I am a recent buyer of a 1200gs and now my brother is getting one too because... well, they're brilliant. I'm alarmed at the amount of failures of the fuel pump controllers even though it seems as though it's a small percentage of bikes that have suffered it and mine has done 55000 miles without missing a beat. Well my reading up on the flaws has seemed to show up a few trends but I wanted to pick the brains of those with more experience and see if I'm getting this right. Other Beemers have the same FPC but have fewer faults than the GS. The GSA seems to be mentioned as having a slightly higher rate of faults than the GS and people seem to moan about faults occuring during runs. Now all this points, in my mind to poor positioning of the unit on the GS and possibly poor insulation, especially afflicting machines which are being used in a way they're not used to, ie getting wet on a run. In other words is this something I can safeguard against by adding some waterproofing and spraying silicone oil over the circuit? What about the antenna fault? Any trends there?

Can I suggest a determined use of the search facility on here? You'll find a gazillion posts discussing the same thing, including some who think water ingress is not actually the problem.

Have a look at this for a good "get you home" work around. There was another good one posted here somewhere, don't know which thread though.

The FPC's fail at random and it doesn't seem to matter what version they are or what steps have been taken to prevent it. Its one of the hazards of owning a 1200, unfortunate and not right on a 10k bike but true.

My advice is make/buy a bypass cable and read up how to access the FPC so you can get yourself home. Once you're home if in warranty BMW will fix it for free or if not you can phone around at your leisure to source a new one.

Some buy a spare FPC in case theirs packs in but I can't really see the need unless you're off on a round the world trip even then I'm sure you could have one mailed to you in the event of a breakdown without too much hassle.

If it fails, it fails, as long as you're prepared for it its no great problem, the problem comes when you're not.
