Fuel pump gauze filter replacement

How do you replace the gauze filter on the fuel pump ? Mine is split - gawd knows how but it needs replacing. It's listed as a seperate part number (16 14 1 341 233 ) but I can't see how to remove it.

To quote ADVRIDER

"There is a filter screen located on the inlet side of the pump. They split and sometimes allow debris to clog a pump impeller. Pop off the old screen with a flat blade screw driver. Try and move the pump impeller with a screw driver. Replace inlet sock with one from auto parts store such as Master STS-7 or FS-22. Any inlet sock that fits will do as long as there is no interference with the fuel float arm when installed. $5 at CKS $50 at BMW."

As stated above, remove the gauze by prising it with a flat bladed screwdriver. Don't - I repeat, don't - stick anything into the pump workings.

Available from Motorworks or similar for around 20 quid which is money well spent. My 1100 had no gauze at all when I bought it - guess how I found out .

Fortunately I'd just got home when it stopped!

Did you have to disassemble the pump from the housing or can you just prise it out with out taking the whole thing apart?

As far as I recall you can remove it in situ. FWIW when mine was found to be split at the end about three years ago I just folded it over and stapled it. Probably not a BMW-approved fix, but so far it seems to be ok. I now have a filter; I'll replace it when I next do the delivery side one.

Its pretty straightforward to do - I replaced mine when I put the new fuel sender unit in - around £18 for a BMW part plus £1:00 each for the final unit sealing rubbers - just take your time and be gentle / careful - you might find some photos and part numbers here...

I like the staples idea very ingenious but I think I'll still try the traditional replacement part route .

Just remove the 'tank unit' and the gauze can be taken off as described. Good time to replace the main fuel filter as well.

Yup done that - that's how I found the split but I can't seem to get the gauze filter off. I was going to pass by the dealer tomorrow and order the part and see if they can show me how it comes off.
