Fuel pump question, possibly stupid.

When you turn the ignition on, you hear the fuel pump whine, I'm used to that. Once the engine's running, do you normally hear the pump whining at the same volume and is this normal?

I've had the GS for a few months now and never really noticed it before but since the weekend (when I had the immobiliser removed) I've noticed it every time I've started it. Maybe it's just coincidence, or perhaps even paranoia, but I thought I'd check, as I can hear it sitting there at tickover and also when at low speed in traffic.

The pump is submerged in the fuel so the less fuel you have in the tank the less there is to deaden the sound of the pump and the louder it'll sound. They do vary a bit in volume but in general yes, it's normal to be able to hear them.

I asked the same question of my 2nd 1150... it appeared noisier than the previous one, to the degree that I could hear it when the bike was ticking over quite clearly..... but it didn't indicate impending problems, doing two trips to Europe in 2 years and always stayed the same

did they remove the tank?

if so if its higher pitched than usual check the fuel line to the engine. a kinked / trapped cable will raise the pressue making the pump whine.

It's when the pump makes no noise at all that you have bother.

Mine got a bit quieter after changing the filter, but the one on my R1100S can be heard over the engine from a distance of several miles and has been that was for at least the last 50k

Good point. I'd thought mine used to be noisier than it is now. I changed the filter at the last service - that's probably why.
